TITLE: BUILDING TELEPHONE CABLE

Objectives

Able to make termination for telephone cables by using RJ-11 connector.

Equipment list

1. A category 3 telephone cable.

2. 2 RJ-11 connector
3. Crimping, stripping and cutter tool.

Introduction

On lab activity for building telephone cable, I had learned and experienced on built the RJ-
45 and RJ-11 connector. Based on the previous lessons related to this topic, I can understand
this topic clearly.

Theory

RJ is stand for registered jack. RJ-45 is a type of connector that commonly used for Ethernet
networking. It looks similar to a telephone jack but it is slightly wider. RJ-45 have a
connector on each end. The ‘45’ is refer to the number of the interface standard. Each of its
connector has eight pins which presented eight separate wires. Four of them are solid
colours while the other four are striped. RJ-45 cables can be wired in two different ways,
which are T-568A and T-568B. RJ-11 is a telephone interface that uses a cable of twisted
wire pairs and a modular jack with two, four or six contacts. RJ-11 is the most connector for
plugging a telephone into the wall and the handset into the telephone.

Procedure

RJ-11 Cable:

1. Make a straight cut at the end of the cable.

2. Strip the cable jacket as suit at the female connector. Make sure the cable is align at
the cable end.

3. Insert the cable into the RJ-11 connector and the cable end is touching the end of
cable.
4. Crimp the connector using the crimping tools.

5. Test the connector using cable tester.

RJ-45 cable:

1. Make a straight cut at the end of the cable.

2. Strip the cable jacket using stripper carefully to avoid damage at the wire insulation.

3. Spread and arrange the pairs of crossover cable as shown on table below. Align the
cable end.
4. Insert the cable core into the RJ-45 connector.

5. Crimping the RJ-45 connector at the front of the crimper.

6. Test both ends of the cable with UTP cable tester.

7. Repeat the first until sixth steps for straight cable.

Conclusion

As a conclusion, I had learned how to make a connection for RJ-45 and RJ-11
connector. I manage to troubleshoot when cable tester did not light up when the connector
been tested. I understand how RJ-45 and RJ-11 functioning.

Recommendation

Based on my experience completing the lab activity, I feel that I should be more careful and
measure the cable right before I start to avoid any wasted of the cable and connector. This is
due to a lot of wasted on cable and connector that been cut due to fail during cable testing.
