PROBLEM OF MANAGEMENT OF SOLID URBAN WASTE IN ANGOLA: CASE STUDY: BENGUELA

PROVINCE/ MUNICIPAL SEAT.

JOSEFINA WANDI CASSINDA

JUNE 2018

INTRODUCTION

The proper management of solid urban waste is a topic of great relevance at the global,
socio-economic and environmental level, with increasing and particular attention being
paid both by the population and by governments in order to minimize its effects on the
environment . (Martinho et al., 2000, Russo 2003).

In Angola, and in particular in Benguela Municipality, there has been an economic

development in recent years, with repercussions on urbanization and increasing
consumption patterns that point to the increase in the quantity and complexity of U.S.W.

OBJECTIVES

This project has the following objectives:

Classify the USW produced;

Identify the main diseases related to inadequate solid waste management;

Relate the deficiencies in the removal of wate with the quality of life of the population;

To evaluate the knowledge of the population regarding the theme of waste

management;

Contribute to better management of waste produced;

Make improvement proposals that help minimize or solving problem.

The objectives outlined above are intended to clarify the research that I intend to
develop, encompassing theoretical aspects and the results that will be achieved by
fieldwork.

FUNDAMENTALS

The management of U.S.W follows a circuit from its deposition to the final destination,
which must follow the following sequence:

* Deposition

* Collection

* Transport

* Screening

* Treatment

* Final Deposition

When waste is not properly deposited at landfills but in uncontrolled landfills or

dumpsters, they become a health hazard and contribute to surface and groundwater
pollution, rendering them unfit for consumption.

The correct management of municipal solid waste helps to protect the health and
minimize environmental risks as well as the well-being of the populations.

METHODOLOGY

The present project will be based on information provided by the companies involved
and the Benguela Municipal Administration, bibliographic research, production of
inquiries and commercial establishments and provision of services and interviews with
entities responsible for the management of solid urban waste.
