Title: Multi-digit whole number multiplication (Standard algorithm)

Subject/Grade Level/ Date(s): Math, 5th, 9/30/2019

Time Requirements: 1 hour 20 minutes

Materials List:

 Math Textbook pages 124-126

 White boards and markers
 Clear cover sheets

Type of Lesson: Whole group, independent (exit ticket)

Connection to Standards:

 5.NBT.B.5: Fluently multiply multi-digit whole numbers using a standard

algorithm.

Instructional Objective:

 Students will use standard algorithm to solve multi-digit multiplication problems.

Language Objective: n/a

Active Instructional Plan:

We will begin our lesson with a math talk. Students will have to solve 10x28 in their heads. Students
will then discuss as a class their ideas on how they solved the problem.

We will transition into the math lesson by start reviewing standard algorithm and the steps we take
when using it to solve a problem. Students will be given examples on the board that they will work on
independently on their white boards. Once all students have finished a problem, they will hold their
white boards in the air. We will go over common errors like multiplying only the numbers that are on top
of one number, or not placing the 0 when multiplying in the 10s place. After 3 practice questions
students will start on their assigned problem set pages in their workbooks that is posted on the math
board.

Students will open to page 124 and we will walk through the question together explaining what is
expected from them. Students will than start to work on problems assigned to them with their table
groups. Students will have 30 minutes to finish their assignments, assignments must be finished before
moving onto exit ticket.

While students work on their problem set questions, I will be calling back students to meet with them to
answer any questions/ problems they have with the lesson and working with them on the questions.
Once students finish their group work problems or the 30 minutes are up, students will move on to their
exit tickets. Exit tickets will be done independently and will be turned in for grading when completed.
Exit tickets will be used for math group selections for the following day.

Assessment/Evaluation:

During the math talk and lesson I will be evaluating students on their participation and correctness on
answers. I will be monitoring students as they work together and work independently. While students
work in groups I will be walking around checking on their in group participation and answering
questions they might have. Their exit ticket will be graded and the grade will be used for future help
they might need.

Modifications/Differentiation:

Students who need more time will be granted an extension on their assignments if needed. Student
can come in at lunch or after school to get help on any questions on problems they might have from
their assignment.
