There are three basic English conditionals plus the so-called zero conditional. There are some
more conditionals that we do not use so often.

FUTURE POSSIBLE
We use the so-called zero conditional when the result of the condition is always true, like a
scientific fact.
Take some ice. Put it in a saucepan. Heat the saucepan. What happens? The ice melts (it becomes
water). You would be surprised if it did not.

B.
We are talking about the future. We are thinking about a particular condition or situation in the
future, and the result of this condition. There is a real possibility that this condition will happen.
For example, it is morning. You are at home. You plan to play tennis this afternoon. But there are
some clouds in the sky. Imagine that it rains. What will you do?

Describe a perfect café for you, including things that you wouldn’t have or do and see if your
partner agrees.
l If he asks for a glass of milk, ² he might notice that his hair needs a

l When he looks into the mirror, ² he’ll hang up his drawing on the
refrigerator and stand back to look at it.
l When he’s done,
² he’ll probably ask you for a straw.
l When he’s finished giving himself a
trim, ² he’ll probably want to take a nap. So
you’ll read him from one of your books
and he’ll ask to see the pictures.

² he’ll want a broom to sweep up.
l When the picture is finished,
² he’ll want to draw one of his own and
l When you give him the milk, he’ll ask for paper and crayons.
The second conditional is like the first conditional. We are still thinking about the future. We are
thinking about a particular condition in the future, and the result of this condition. But there is not a
real possibility that this condition will happen. For example, you do not have a lottery ticket. Is it
possible to win? No! No lottery ticket, no win! But maybe you will buy a lottery ticket in the
future. So you can think about winning in the future, like a dream. It's not very real, but it's still
possible.

D. Reading
I can imagine what my life would be like if I won the lottery. Wow! I could do so many things,
and my life would be so different. I would love the chance to change my life with the money.
The first thing I would do is buy a big, new house. I live in a small apartment, and I have
always dreamed of living in a big house in the country. With all that money, I could buy
anything I wanted. I don’t have a car right now, so I would buy a new car. Or, I might even
buy a new motorcycle. I like motorcycles, and I can imagine myself driving down the highway
with the wind in my hair.
Of course, I if I won the lottery, I should give some of the money to charity. I would probably
give my money to a charity that helps sick children. Also, if any of my friends needed anything,
I could help them pay for it. I know many people that have student loans, and I could help
them pay the loans back. That would make them very happy. Plus, if I won a lot of money, I
would certainly save some of it in the bank.
Also, I think that if I won a huge amount of money, I would open a business. I love to cook,
and I have always wanted to open a restaurant. With all that money I could open a fancy
restaurant.
However, I know one thing I would not do is travel. I have a friend who won $100, 000 in the
lottery three years ago. She took the money and travelled for three months. I think she is
crazy. Travelling is nice, but then she had nothing left after her vacation.
I think, however, that the only problem with dreaming about the money I could win is that I
have never even played the lottery before. As they say: “You can’t win if you don’t play.”
Vocabulary
Questions:
1. What would the person NOT buy if she won the lottery?
2. What would the person NOT do if she won the lottery?
3. Why would she open a restaurant?
4. Why would she not travel?
5. Do you think she will win the lottery?
What do you think would your father do (5 things) if he won the lotter.
for no possibility
The first conditional and second conditionals talk about the future. With the third
conditional we talk about the past. We talk about a condition in the past that did not happen.
That is why there is no possibility for this condition. The third conditional is also like a dream,
but with no possibility of the dream coming true.
Last week you bought a lottery ticket. But you did not win. :-(

Questions
Sometimes, we give advice by showing what we would have done in the same situation.
CONTRACTIONS
The combination of a modal verb and “have” are contracted to make the following words:
would’ve
could’ve
Examples:
woulda
coulda
shoulda
Use: Regrets, comments about past situations that have present consequences.
The expressions 'I wish' and 'If only' are used in English to express wishes and regrets about
things that may happen in the future or may have happened in the past.
They should be studied in relation with the three types of conditional sentences:
E.g. If I have enough money, I will travel to New York. (That is, I will check how much money
I have and see if it possible for me to go)
E.g.: If I had enough money, I would travel to New York. (That is, I don't really have the
money to afford the voyage, so I won't go)
E.g.: If I had had enough money, I would have gone to New York. (I wanted to go, but I didn't
have enough money, so I couldn't)
When I wish and if only are used, they follow the structure of one of these conditionals,
depending on what we want to express. If we talk about a regret about a present or future event,
then we will use the structure of the second type of conditional and the expressions I wish/if
only are followed by past simple:
(That is, I don't have enough money, and I am sorry for it because I can't go)
If the event we regret happened (or failed to happen) in the past and is, therefore, impossible to
change, then we use the third type of conditional structure. This time the expressions I wish/if
only are followed by past perfect.
(That is, I didn't have enough money to travel, so I couldn't go and now I regret it)

Should`ve Said NO- Taylor Swift
You say that you'd take it all back, given one chance
It was a moment of and you said, "Yes."
You say that the past is the past, you need one
It was a moment of weakness and you said, "Yes."
I can't
Before you go, tell me this:
Was it worth it?
Was she this?
1. Have you ever had to make a difficult decision in your life? What made you decide what to do?
Can you talk about it?
2. Have you ever made a wrong choice? Talk about it?
You have two children. A four year-old boy and a three-year old girl. A criminal tells you
to sacrifice one of your children or both of them die. He won't choose; you have to do it. If you
don't choose one of them, both of them die. You cannot sacrifice yourself to save both of them. If
you do it, both of them die. What would you do? Who would you choose to survive?
You saw your best friend's lover kissing another person. Your best friend loves her
partner and is nine-month pregnant. You don't know how involved your friend's lover is with
that stranger. Would you tell him/her what you saw?
You receive the news that the person you love most will die in two months. This situation
can't be changed. He/she has a lot of plans for the future and is very happy with her life, her
accomplishments and expectations for the future. However, he/she is not in a hurry and is
planning things slowly. What would you do? Warn him and make him enjoy life immediately,
risking fostering depression and desperation? Would you let him/her waste his time and
opportunities to enjoy the time that is left for him/her without worries?
II. Here are six questions one should ask himself before making a difficult choice. Answer the
questions, connecting them with each of the four situations above:
III. Watch the movie segment and answer the questions in exercise II. How would she probably
answer those questions?
IV. What would you do if you were in her shoes? How would you answer those questions in
exercise II if you were in her position?
1. You are in line and the person behind you keeps bumping on your back.
5. Someone sneezes a few times on your popcorn bag in the movie theater.
6. A doctor uses a tiny rubber hammer on your knee to test your reflexes, but it hurts you.
7. Someone is flirting with you, but when you eventually decide to take action and approach the
person, you realize he/she is aiming at another person, not you.
II. Now watch the movie segment and check what Red, the bird, did in those situations. How
similar were your answers and Red's reaction?
