III. Brief Description of
Activity • Career training program is a 10 month program where people who are seeking a
second chance come to get training for vocational careers. This program not only
offers training for the career they decide to choose from, but also provides housing for
those in the program that do not have the financial stability to have their own place to
live. In this program, the applicant must go through a process of interviews to be
accepted into this program. Once the program has accepted the applicant, they will
then choose a career, the program provides training for and enrolls into the desired
program.

• Relevance / Importance to the Specific Population

Employment is recognized as an important factor in the treatment of drug addiction.

Individuals who are unemployed have higher rates of substance abuse than those who
are regularly employed, unemployment is common among individuals in substance
abuse treatment, and poorer treatment outcomes (e.g., treatment attrition, more drug
use during treatment, higher rates of relapse) are associated with unemployment.

Taylor (2008) examined the integration of vocational services (intensive psycho-

educational treatment, re-entry skills building and community reintegration) within a
therapeutic community providing treatment for alcohol and other drugs. Results
indicated positive outcomes with maintenance of stable employment, pro-social
engagement, and the prevention of relapse. Vocational training and steady
employment seem to contribute to lower relapse rates of individuals with alcohol and
other drug dependency.
