Problem Statement

Use the quadratic equation, find the vertex, and graph of h(t)= -16t^2 +92t +160 then put the
positive x intercept into d(t)= 92t/tan 65.

Process

I approached this problem algebraically by determining what I needed to solve for. I decided that
to find the highest point of the graph and how long it would take to get there I would need to find
the vertex (x= time, y= height). Then I determined that I would also need to find the positive
x-intercept because that would tell me the time the rocket would hit the ground. Then I could
plug it into the d(t) equation to find the horizontal distance of the rocket.

Distance- time graph of the rocket

Solution/Reflection

The vertex is at (2.88 sec, 292.2ft), which means after 2.88 seconds the rocket peaks to 292.2
ft; the x-intercept plugged into d(t) is 305.5ft, which means the rocket’s horizontal distance is
305.5 ft. I think my answer is correct because when you graph the equation of the rocket it

matches up exactly with the answers I acquired by solving algebraically. When solving this
problem I used the generating ideas aspect of the Habits of a Mathematician. I had to formulate
a plan to figure out what I needed to solve for. Then I had to identify different formulas to solve
for x-intercepts and the vertex.
