1 Introduction
1.1 General Description

INVERPACK inverter series is an integrated telecommunication AC power system, including inverter, static
transfer switch, controller/interface and maintenance bypass switch modules. With versatile “building block”
design and N+1 redundant configuration, INVERPACK inverter system facilitates complex telecommunication
and industrial power demands.

INVERPACK series is a, hot-swap, DC to AC inverter module available for 1000VA and 1500VA. It converts
-48VDC input to 120 or 230VAC output at 50 or 60Hz. A 19’ hot-swap compatible chassis is designed to parallel
connect and synchronize all INVERPACK inverter modules. With this chassis, INVERPACK series employs N+1
redundant configuration to increase the output power maximum 12 times for 120V models and 12 times for 230V
models, and to operate in N+1 redundant mode for optimization. INVERPACK “all master” dynamic mechanism
automatically share and re-organize critical loads to further prevent interruption when one or more inverter
modules fail.

Adopting DSP microprocessor, INVERPACK monitoring controller gives real-time system status through
comprehensive LCD /LED, and allows program settings through the display panel. INVERPACK selective static
transfer switch provides automatic instantaneous load transfer, which further secures uninterrupted operation of
sensitive electronic equipment. Installed INVERPACK communication interface module, you can control and
monitor the system at a distance.

1.3.3 INVERPACK STS Module Electrical Specifications

STS schematic introduce:
The Static Transfer Switch (STS) module is an optional feature of the system. The STS increases system
reliability by providing automatic switching between the inverter output and the AC mains source, providing
protection against load interruptions caused by severe overload or inverter system failure.
The Maintenance Bypass Switch (MBS) is also an optional feature of the system. The MBS consists of a
mechanical switch providing voltage free system maintenance for the safe removal of inverters or the static bypass
module without load power interruptions. MBS has two main contacts, when the user move the MBS manually to
inverter bypass or mains AC bypass position, the MBS main contact2 or the MBS main contact1 will be closed,
inverter or mains AC will power the load via MBS directly, while the STS could be removed.
STS and MBS schematic is showed as below:

STS

Position status of MBS:

The MBS has five positions, for short we call them MBP, MSS, NORM, ISS, IBP. The MBP and IBP position are
used to insert or pull STS into or out the system rack without load power interruption, the MSS and ISS positions are
designed for Inverter maintenance and Mains AC maintenance respectively, the NORM position is the primary
operation position for the system, at this position the output power will never be interrupted except that both Mains AC
and Inverters are abnormal. At NORM position, if you want to maintain inverter module, or inverter input or output
connections, you can switch MBS from NORM to MSS position, this manipulation can guarantee the continuity of
output power, on the other hand, you can switch MBS from NORM to ISS position, if you want to maintain Mains AC
input without load power interruption, in order to guarantee the maximum reliability of the system, you should make
sure the MBS is at NORM position if no maintenance is needed. The following table shows the detail:

you want to change it. When you change its position you must confirm that keep MBS at one position more than 1
second in order to MCU of STS has enough time to detect MBS position via MBS auxiliary contacts (CN1 in figure 6).

100 to 114Vac for 120 Vac systems
Redundant power supply design Startup power-on by priority source or alternative

Notes1:The over/under voltage for each rate must be set by the controller. If the controller module doesn’t exist in the system,
the STS module will adopt the widest range to set over/under voltage in order to guarantee its performance. For 110/115/120
Vac system, the range is from 89Vac(under voltage point) to 138Vac(over voltage point); For 208/220/230/240 Vac system,
the range is from 176Vac(under voltage point) to 276Vac(over voltage point). However, once the STS module is set by the
controller, it will memorize the setting permanently no matter the controller module exists or not, unless the STS is set by
controller again or the AC source changes from 120V(110/115/120) to 240V(208/220/230/240) or from
240V(208/220/230/240) to 120V(110/115/120).

STS Output specifications:

Table 12:Output specifications

Item specification
Nominal Output Voltage Same as utility voltage or inverter output
Permissible Frequency Area Max. +/-2.5% (inverter synchronization)
Transfer Time Typical 1/4cycle
Rated Power 50A
Operation Methods Inverter priority / Mains priority
Over load protection 20S 120% Inom
5S 160% Inom
STS-50 : Inom=50A
Note: When Mains has the priority, and STS woks in off-line
mode, if change the priority to Inverter, then STS will estimate
the load capability of Inverter to decide whether transfer to
on-line mode. If the current load exceeds the load capability of
Inverter, STS won’t transfer to on-line mode; otherwise it will
transfer to on-line mode 5s later.
Over temperature On-line mode:
When the temperature of heat sink in STS is over 85ºC, the static
switch will power the load through the internal bypass relay, and the
SCR2 on the side of the inverter will be open. If the temperature
reaches 90ºC, the bypass relay will be open, and the load will be no
power unless STS is restarted. The system will re-establish the power
through the inverter with SCR2 close and relay open, when the
temperature is within 65ºC, STS return to normal mode.
Off-line mode:
When the temperature of heat sink in STS is over 85ºC, the static
switch will transfer to on-line mode if Inverter is normal, then the over
temperature protection is the same as on-line mode.

2.2 Handling and Storage

If the inverter system modules or shelves are going to be stored prior to installation, they should be stored in a cool,
dry, well-ventilated location where the rain, splashing water, chemical agents, etc. will not reach based on the
environment specification standard. The equipments should be covered with a tarpaulin or plastic wrapper to
protect it against dust, dirt, paint, or other materials.

2.3 Location

INVERPACK inverter system is designed for installation in a protected environment. Factors to be considered in
selecting a location include ventilation, temperature, humidity, and accessibility. Install each unit in a clean, dry
location with an unrestricted air flow and sufficient space for rear and front access. INVERPACK inverter system
will provide its full capability in ambient temperatures from -5°C to 50°C (23°F to 122°F). Higher ambient
temperatures will lead to a shorter life. Gasses emanating from the battery can be corrosive and highly flammable,
so isolate the INVERPACK system units from the battery as much as possible.

2.5 Wiring Connection

CAUTION: Ensure all the power sources are OFF during wiring. Disconnect battery cables from
battery.

The INVERPACK inverter modules are designed to operate in parallel for higher output current, two modules are
automatically connected in parallel in each shelf. Two or more inverter shelves can be further connected in parallel
for additional output power. This is done by connecting all inputs (BAT-, BAT+) in parallel, and outputs (Line,
Neutral, Ground) in parallel. When paralleled there is no mater unit and each unit adjusts its own power level for
best power sharing. Please refer to the following wiring instructions for your needs.

When selecting wiring, consider the following factors:

l Current carrying capacity of the wire
l Maximum wire length needed
l Maximum ambient temperature

IMPORTANT: Use the table below as a guide only. Ensure that the installation complies with the specific
wiring rules applicable to your country or area of jurisdiction.

2.5.1 Single-Shelf Wiring

1. In the inverter chassis package, you should find a jumper. When only ONE inverter chassis is applied in the
system, insert the jumper to PIN 1 & 2 of Connector JP2.

Figure 20: Install jumper when single shelf

2. Negative (BAT-) and Positive (BAT+) DC input terminal studs are located in the left side of backplane with brass
hardware. In considerations of the power rating and distance from the battery, choose appropriate gauge wire
guiding from Table 9, as well as local wiring rules. Thread battery cables through left-side panel knock-out, put the
hole lug at one end of each battery cable to DC input stud, and secure the connection with two supplied cross
hex-washer type nickel screws and washers as shown. Install the other end of battery cables to battery or 48V DC
source.

WARNING: DC source voltage should be between 45V and 58 V

CAUTION: Reverse polarity connections would damage the unit and is not cover by the warranty. Ensure

correct polarity (positive to positive, negative to negative) before completing connections

between battery and INVERPACK inverter unit.

Figure 21: Single shelf DC Input wiring

31

3. Central three studs in the backplane are AC output terminals. AC neutral, ground and line are marked as UC3, UC4
and UC5, respectively. With checking the AC output voltage, refer Table 16, as well as local wiring rules, and
choose appropriate gauge wire. Thread AC neutral and line wires through left-side panel knock-out, put the hole
lug at one end of each wire to AC neutral and AC line studs, and secure the connection with two supplied cross
hex-washer type nickel screws and washers as shown. Install the other end of wires to the load.

AC Ground stud (UC4) is mainly for inter-connection with extra shelves. To do system grounding, cover up the
backplane with the rear cover first, and screw the ground wire on the rear cover with the supplied cross hex-washer
type nickel screw as shown.
Figure 22: Single shelf Ground wiring

2.5.2 Multi-Shelf Wiring

1. CN20 and CN21at the inverter shelf backplane are inter-parallel connectors for inverter synchronization. The
upper port is used to connect inverter shelf above, and the lower port is used to connect inverter shelf below. Use
the flat communication cable to connect all available inverter shelves.

Figure 23: Install Signal cable when multi-shelf used

2. Use the supplied bus bars for connecting the DC negative input (BAT-) studs of all available shelves together with
cross hex-washer type nickel screws and washers. Similarly, connect DC positive input (BAT+) studs of all shelves
together. Do the same for AC neutral (UC3), AC ground (UC4) and AC line (UC5) studs individually.

32
INVERPACK Inverter System User Manual – 355164.013

Figure 24:Install DC and AC bus bar

CAUTION: Be sure that no jumper is inserted into JP2 connector of all connected inverter shelves.

3. Choose appropriate gauge wire with considerations of the total input current of the whole inverter system, distance
from the battery, and local wiring rules. Thread two battery cables through left-side panel knockout, and attach one
battery cable to one DC negative input stud (BAT-) and the other to one DC positive input stud (BAT+). Secure the
connection with two supplied cross hex-washer type nickel screws and washers as shown. Install the other end of
battery cables to battery or 48V DC source.

WARNING: DC source voltage should be between 45V and 58 V

CAUTION: Reverse polarity connections would damage the unit and is not cover by the warranty.

Ensure correct polarity (positive to positive, negative to negative) before completing

connections between battery and INVERPACK inverter unit.

NOTE: INVERPACK inverter modules allow maximum 12 units cascaded for expanding power capacity.
The input current of entire inverter system would exceed the current limit of available wires.
When the total input current carrying is over the cable current limit, split DC connection to
multiple groups by removing inter-connected BAT+ & BAT- bus bars between groups, and choose
suitable wire size for each group.

CASE STUDY: An inverter system is with eight INVERPACK1000 48 110 inverter modules (8kVA). The total input
current, 151.5Amp, can be halved by removing DC positive (BAT+) and DC negative (BAT-) bus bars
connected between Shelves 2 and 3. DC connection is split into two groups (4kVA and 4kVA). After
selecting suitable wire for minimum transmission current of 75.8Amp, two pairs of battery cable are
separately connected to DC positive and negative studs of both groups as shown.
