Research Rationale

Literature is a way to experience a way of life, a time period, a culture,

an emotion, a deed, an event that you are not otherwise able, willing (as, say,

in the case of murder), or capable of encountering in any other manner

(McGee: 2002). Literature is an artistic creation express by means of beautiful

language, and “by beautiful language” means highly selective language that

can “tremble” and “absorb” the readers’ souls due to its beauty in form and in

the content of the messages (Djasi: 2001). Literature adds the beauties aspect

by substituting the nature of something that will be substituted for literary

work. Literature has a selective language which is differs it from the literal

meaning.

One of the studies in literature is figurative language. Figurative

language is derived from the literal meaning and can be discovered by

discovering nature of the substitution of the metaphorical for the literal

meaning (Glucksberg: 2001). Figurative language is a language that is used in

a way that is different from the usual meaning, in order to create a particular

mental image. One implication of this assumption is that metaphoric

interpretations involve recovering the original literal expression for which the

metaphor substitutes. Figurative language has unusual meaning to make the

reader or hearer will have little confusing, but in the same situation the beauty

of art is bringing in the figurative language.

Figurative language is needed to study because the language in a song

lyric, poem, and others resources provide the figurative language inside. Then,

the message in the language/sources must be understood by the reader or

listener, to get the information from the texts or oral stories which include

figurative meaning inside. The researcher hopes this study will be a benefit to

the readers especially to the students who are interested in analyzing the same

literary work of song lyrics or whoever wants to learn about figurative

language to understand the messages in a literary work.

Furthermore, in the syllabus of Senior High School curriculum 2013,

there is an item in identifying the song lyric. This is one of the reasons why

the students also have to study about figurative language in the songs lyric.

This is a big problem for students or people if they do not understand the

meaning of figurative language. They will have a misunderstanding in a

language. Based on my experience when I was teaching in Senior High

School, many students did not understand the figurative language. This is a

fact that figurative meaning is difficult for the students to comprehend.

Besides the reasons above, listening to a song is a pleasure, with this

pleasure and happiness in the heart and relax in the mind will be easier to

motivate the students to study figurative language trough the song.

Furthermore, the song is not only to be listening, but also need to comprehend

the meaning inside in order to achieve the messages from the singer. Next,
one of the considerations by the researcher to conduct this research is based

on the argument of Agni (2010) who says that literature study will increase all

language skills because literature presents language that illustrates”. So, it will

be better for the student to study literature, especially in this case “figurative

language” to develop their language skills.

The researcher chooses the songs of Kande Band for his research to be

analyzed because the Kande’s Song is full of cultural aspects and figurative

languages. The Kande’s Song is also so familiar or famous to our society in

Aceh. The Kande’s songs are also loved by people because the unique of the

voice of the Rafli as the singer and the lyric of Kande has a powerful spirit of

the Acehnese culture. The values of culture, education, religion, and art are

very thick in Kande’s Song. Kande’s Song can be as adding advice to students

and others. The explanations above are the consideration for the researcher to

conduct the research entitled “An Analysis of Figurative Language in Kande’s

Song Lyric”.

Theoretical Basic

Literature is a way to experience a way of life, a time period, a culture,

an emotion, a deed, an event that you are not otherwise able, willing (as, say,

in the case of murder), or capable of encountering in any other manner

(McGee: 2002). Then, According to Agni (2010) literature study will increase

all language skills because literature presents language that illustrates” a

particular dialect’ which is embedded within a social context”. Study about

literature to increase the language skill is important.

Figurative language is a symbolic or metaphorical and not meant to be

taken literally (Croft: 2000). Perrine (1992: 256) says that “figure of speech

constitutes any way saying something other than the ordinary way. According

to Dancygier and Sweetser (2014), figurative language serves human

purposes, whether everyday communicative purposes in some speech setting,

or purposes more specific to some genre of communication, or of course

artistic and creative purposes in Literal meaning is basic and has

unconditional priority. We need to study literature such figurative language to

understand the messages from literary works which as the human interaction

language. Study the figurative language will make someone understand the

information from the author in literary works such as a song lyric.
