CHAPTER 1

INTRODUCTION

Rationale

School facilities shall exist primarily to serve school district

educational, co-curricular, recreational and administrative activities. Upon the

satisfaction of the public school district’s need and use, district facilities shall

then be made available to other groups (Waunekee 2012).

A well-designed school building, that considers ergonomics,

anthropometrics, thermal comfort, illumination, ventilation, acoustics, color,

and compliance with the law, contributes to improved student performance,

and makes a lasting impression on the community with regard to importance

of education (DepEd 2017).

This research study is all about to know if the facilities and materials

in school have effect in academic performance of grade 12 general academic

strand student at Las Piñas City National Senior High School- CAA Campus.

Significance of the Study

The vital result of this study could be highly significance and

beneficial to the following.

Student. Because student are the main user of facilities in every activity and

practical learning. The students must care the material and if they

destroy them some item in facilities they have responsibility to fix or

change it.

Teacher. Because teacher need facilities to teach properly and live teaching to

student like science laboratory, computer room, kitchen to better

learning to the student. Teacher must always remind and observed the

student to be careful to using school material and facilities.

Parents. They will benefit this study also because their son and daughter

should learn not by their mind they also know by practical. Parent

should help to get have better facilities like donating school materials.

REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE AND STUDIES

This chapter showed the review of related literature and studies

that has a connection in the research study, definition of terms and conceptual

framework.

Related Literature Local

“School facilities” are buildings and grounds, parking lots, playing

fields, and fixed equipment. It is the board’s desire that the local taxpayers who

provide the school should be able to obtain maximum use of the facilities, to

the extent consistent with the primary educational function of the school. It is

intended that community uses for educational, recreational, social, civic, and

philanthropic and like purposes be approved by the administration in

accordance with this policy, implementing regulations and a fee when

appropriate. (SURRY SCHOOL DEPARTMENT, 2010)

This section contains the research literatures that have a connection by

the presence of study. The sources are from the different published outputs.

The purpose of this study was to inform the California Department of

Education (CDE) in ensuring the standards contained in Title 5 appropriately

promote the planning and design of healthy, safe and educationally suitable K-

12 school facilities. The study gathers and analyzes K-12 facility standards in

other states across the country to understand state policy trends and best

practice in the field. The findings further the development of

state policies by providing information about existing policies and

standards that promote sound K-12 school facility planning and design

(Vincent Jeffrey M. 2016).

School leaders are feeling conflicted about their school buildings. On

the one hand, they want to provide children with safe, secure spaces. On the

other, they want to provide open, collaborative, and exceptional 21st century

learning environments. By taking a holistic approach, they can have both. It's

important to remember that many current schools were designed with threats

other than school shootings in mind (Minnich, Brian G. 2019).

The 2017 Thought Leaders report focuses on "Transforming Facilities

to Achieve Student Success." The report makes the case that student success

starts with retention and graduation, but it can expand to include factors from

personal career goals to social responsibility. A key message from the report

is that through strategic investment in their facilities, colleges and universities

can support student success, position the campus for the future, and serve as

good stewards of campus assets. The report also stresses that the process must

reflect the mission and vision of the campus, thus making the greatest impact

possible on the college or university's goals(APPA 2017).

Along with teacher attitude, the study revealed the attitudes of students,

administrators, and community members are affected by facilities, according to

the teachers interviewed. This study is useful to educational leaders from

every sector in education as it provides decision makers with pertinent

information from stakeholders about the importance of facilities to the

educational process. Thus, educational leaders are aided in strategic planning

for the future of the educational system they maintain or manage (Young, James

R. 2018).

Related Studies

Australia has been the site of significant school facility design

innovation during the past decade. This innovation was showcased in 2013 in

a report released by the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and

Development (OECD) titled "Innovative Learning Environments, Educational

Research and Innovation." It featured case studies of 40 exemplary schools

from around the world. Of these, seven were from Australia, including six

from Victoria. While international attention directed towards the designs of

Australian schools is nice, there remains little empirical evidence to attest to

the effectiveness of these and other innovative school facilities in supporting

desired and emerging pedagogies in primary and secondary schools. The

Towards Effective Learning Environments in Catholic Schools: An Evidence

Based Approach (TELE) project was set up in 2015 as a collaborative

research initiative between Catholic Education Melbourne (CEM) and the

Learning Environments Applied Research Network (LEaRN) at the University

of Melbourne. Over three years (2015-2017) the project aims to develop

empirical evidence and subsequent guidelines that can aid decisions about

how best to design and use of learning environments (school facilities) in

primary and secondary schools. During the course of the project, the

Pedagogical effectiveness of 36 learning environments in primary and

secondary schools will be evaluated across the Melbourne Diocese using

LEaRN Evaluation Module 3--Alignment of Pedagogy and Learning

Environments. In doing so, the project seeks to answers to the following

questions: 1) How can Catholic school learning environments be designed and

used to best pedagogical effect?; 2) How well aligned are contemporary

pedagogies with the designs of learning environments in Catholic schools in the

Melbourne Diocese?; 3) What influence do different building typologies have

on this alignment?; 4) How can the alignment between contemporary

pedagogies and the design of school learning environment be improved?; and

5) Is there any correlation between the relative alignment of pedagogies and

learning environments and the learning outcomes achieved by

students (non-

Causal)? For the purposes of the project, learning environments have been

delineated by the adjoining spaces used by a class, cohort or year level at the

same school, including shared zones that have consistent physical features.

Five spatial typologies (A to E), as identified by Dovey and Fisher (2014),

have been used to group learning environments with similar spatial

arrangements. These typologies are differentiated by their relative degree of

openness, from traditional classrooms (enclosed) to permanently open-plan

spaces (open).
