Many people are worried over our “cheap art.” Until the 1960’s Filipinos did not use to busy
paintings. An artist was glad to sell as paintings for Php 10, just enough to pay for the paints and for a
meal in a restaurants. He displayed his works in his house or painted only when he had a
commission, that is, when he had an order for a particular painting.
Now, painting is a profitable calling. A Filipino artist can now change thousand for a painting,
and a Filipino housewife feels that she must have a painting in her house. For her “cheap art” is
available. Paintings are displayed anywhere – on fences, near the church, or at they bus stops. Boys
walk on the streets, peddling paintings the way they peddle rubber slippers and plastics pails.
