PART VII: WORKING ON GRAPHIC DESIGNING -

PRINT ADS USING ADOBE PHOTOSHOP
Lesson#28: INTRODUCTION TO GRAPHIC DESIGNING

WHAT IS GRAPHIC DESIGNING?

- Can refer to a number of artistic and professional disciplines which focuses on visual
communication and presentation.
- Various methods are used to create and combine symbols, images and/or words to
create a visual representation of ideas and messages.
- When people need to necessarily express something, usually with an aim towards
promotion or information dispensing, the focus becomes how best to do it.
- GRAPHIC DESIGN was born of art and technology (printing).

FIVE FUNDAMENTALS OF A GRAPHIC ARTIST / DESIGNER

1. Choose an Area of Graphic Designing
• Advertising
• Web Development
• Multimedia
• Print Design
• Animation
2. Acquire the Tool
3. Take a Course
4. Join Community
5. Further Education

GRAPHIC DESIGN: PRINT DESIGN

- Print design, a subset of graphic design, is a form of visual communication used to
convey information to an audience through intentional aesthetic design printed on a
tangible surface, designed to be printed on paper, as opposed to presented on a digital
platform.
- A design can be considered print design if its final form was created through an imprint
made by the impact of a stamp, seal, or dye on the surface of the paper.

Lesson#29: INTRODUCTION TO ADOBE PHOTOSHOP

GRAPHIC DESIGNING SOFTWARE

- In computer graphics, graphics software refers to a program or collection of programs
that enable a person to manipulate images or models visually on a computer.
- Computer graphics can be classified into distinct categories: raster graphics and vector
graphics, with further 2D and 3D variants. Many graphics programs focus exclusively
on either vector or raster graphics, but there are a few that operate on both. It is
simple to convert from vector graphics to raster graphics, but going the other way is
harder. Some software attempts to do this.
- In addition to static graphics, there are animation and video editing software. Different
types of software are often designed to edit different types of graphics such as video,
photos, and vector-based drawings. The exact sources of graphics may vary for
different tasks, but most can read and write files.
- Most graphics programs have the ability to import and export one or more graphics
file formats, including those formats written for a particular computer graphics
program. Examples of such programs include GIMP, Adobe Photoshop, CorelDRAW,
Pizap, Microsoft Publisher, Picasa, etc.

ADOBE PHOTOSHOP OVERVIEW

- Adobe Photoshop has long been considered essential software for
graphic design.
- It is sold on its own or as part of Adobe’s Creative Suite (or Creative
Cloud), which could also include Illustrator, InDesign, Flash,
Dreamweaver, Acrobat Pro, Lightroom and several other tools.
- Photoshop’s primary functions include photo editing, website design, and the creation
of elements for any type of project.
- It is also commonly used to create layouts for design, such as posters and business
cards, although Illustrator or InDesign are often better for those tasks.

ADOBE PHOTOSHOP AS:

- PHOTO EDITING TOOL. Photoshop is called Photoshop for a reason… it is an excellent
tool for editing photos. If a designer is preparing a digital or scanned photograph for
use in a project, whether it be a website, brochure, book design or packaging, the first
step is often to bring it into Photoshop. Using a variety of tools within the software, a
designer can:
• Crop photos; resize photos; adjust and correct colors; touch-up photos, such
as “erasing” a blemish or removing a tear or fold; apply a large selection of
filters such as “watercolor” for special effects and styles; optimize photos for
the web by choosing file formats and reducing file size; save photos in a variety
of formats for use in print projects; and use their creativity to perform countless
tasks.
- WEBSITE DESIGNING TOOL. Photoshop is the preferred tool for many web
designers. While it is capable of exporting HTML, it is often not used to code websites,
but rather to design them before moving on to the coding stage. Along with creating
entire layouts in Photoshop, a designer can:
• Optimize graphics for use online
• Slice up graphics into a collection of images (such as for a button bar)
• Export multiples versions of graphics for mouse rollovers
• Design individual elements such as buttons or backgrounds
- PROJECT LAYOUT TOOL. Software such as InDesign and Illustrator (among others)
is ideal for layout, or desktop publishing. However, Photoshop is more than sufficient
for doing this type of work.
- PROJECT CREATION TOOL. The Adobe developers have spent years creating the
Photoshop tools and interface, which improve with each release.
• The ability to create custom paint brushes, add effects such as drop shadows,
work with photos, and a wide variety of tools make Photoshop a great tool for
creating original graphics.
• These graphics may stand-alone on their own, or they may be imported into
other programs for use in any type of project. Once a designer masters the
Photoshop tools, creativity, and imagination determine what can be created.

- Create New Layer. To create a new layer, go into 'Layer >

New > Layer' or by click the box with folded corner at the
bottom right hand corner of the window.
- Locking Layers. Layers can be locked which means that
they can't be edited until you unlock it. There are Three
different types of Locks.
• Lock Transparent Pixels - This will make the pixels you erase black
instead of getting rid of them.
• Lock Image Pixels - This will mean you can't change the pixels into
anything such as coloring it in.
• Lock Position - This will mean you are not able to move the image.
• The last one will lock everything which mean you will not be able to
edit it at all.
- Hiding Layer. Layer can be hidden by press the 'Eye' icon next to the layer.
Click it again and the layer will be visible again.
- Layer Style. This are some setting that can be changes to make the layer look
different. To open the layer style window just double click the layer which will
open a new window. Some things you can do are:
• Opacity - Change the opacity of the layer.
• Stroke - Put an outline on the layer.
• Inner Shadow - Puts a shadow inside the layer which give it an effect
of it is going inside.
• Inner Glow - Put a glow on the inside.
• Color Overlay - Put a color on top of the layer.
• Gradient Overlay - Put a gradient on top of the layer.
• Pattern Overlay - Put a pattern on top of the layer.
• Outer Glow - Put a glow outside the layer.
• Drop Shadow - Put a shadow underneath the layer which give the
effect of it floating.
• Groups. Groups are used to organize your layer. You can create a
group by clicking on the folder button at the button right hand corner
of the window.
• Guides. Guides are very useful. To make a new guide go to 'View >
New Guide'. This will bring up a new window. You can choose
whether the guide is vertical or horizontal. Then write where it is. I
recommend you use '%'. I suggest when you start a new project you
make two guides, one vertical at 50% and the other horizontal at
50%.

Lesson#31: WORKING ON TEXT

- Adobe Photoshop is mostly used for illustrations and editing photographs.

- You can also add text in Photoshop and adjust qualities such as the font, size and color
of the text, creating advertisements, images, or titles.
- Keep in mind that the main reason why people create text in Photoshop is to add a
visual element to their Photoshop image with short messages, rather than type out
long paragraphs or make text-only documents.

INSERTING PLAIN TEXT

1. Select the Type tool from the tools palette. Click on the icon, or simply press "T" on
your keyboard to bring up the text tool. Now, anywhere you click in your image will
allow you to start adding type.
2. Set your text settings using the menu at the top of the screen. Once you click the Text
tool, a bunch of options will appear at the top of Photoshop allowing you to choose the
color, font, size, and alignment. You can also use the "Character," or the "Paragraph,"
which resemble the text editing boxes in programs like Microsoft Word. You can find
these boxes by clicking on "Window" from the very top of your screen and checking
"Character" and "Paragraph.
• Font: lets you select different font names such as Arial and Times New Roman.
• Font Size: adjust the points of the font size to make the text bigger or smaller.
• Font Alignment: choose whether you want the text to be centered or flushed
to the right or left.
• Font Color: clicking on the font color box will allow you to choose different
colors for the text.
3. Click on the part of your image where you want to add text in Photoshop. If you simply
click somewhere on the image, a cursor will appear where your first letter will appear.

You can simply start typing, and Photoshop will add the words from this starting point.
• If you're just adding simple text, this may be all you need to do.
• If you know how to use the pen tool, you can click on a path to write text along
that line.
4. Click and drag with the text tool, before typing, to contain the text to one area. If you
need to text to fit with a specific area, you can click and drag out the area before you
begin typing. Any text that doesn't fit will not appear unless you shrink the font size.
5. Click outside the text box or press the Ctrl (Control) and Enter keys on your keyboard
simultaneously to see how the text finally appears on your Photoshop image. If it keeps
trying to start new text when you click out, then simply click on another tool to leave
the text editor and move on. You can double-click on the text, or simply click on it
again with the Text tool selected to edit the font and type at any point.
• You can no longer edit text if you "Rasterize it." If you accidentally get this
option, ignore it for now.
• If the text layer is selected, press Ctrl-T or Cmd-T to resize the text by hand,
instead of having to choose new font sizes.

INSERTING PARAGRAPH
1. Select the Type tool from the tools palette.
2. Drag to create a text box of an arbitrary size. After you release the mouse button, you
can drag any of the handles at the corners and sides of the box to customize the size.
3. Select the type options you want from the Options bar, or Character or Paragraph
panel.
4. Enter your text.
APPLYING LAYER DESIGN IN A TEXT
1. On the layers, right click on Text Layer > Blending Options.
2. Layer Style dialog box will be displayed.
3. Select Options on Styles.
4. Adjust properties.
5. Click OK.
