A Note from the Author

S ince It’s Perfectly Normal was first published, Michael

Emberley and I have never stopped talking with kids,
teens, and adults about the information and issues in this
book. It has given us the opportunity and privilege to

learn even more about what kids and teens need to know
to stay healthy. We have consulted with experts, including
parents, teachers, librarians, doctors, nurses, psychologists,
psychoanalysts, scientists, clergy, preteens, and teens, regarding what
information about puberty, sex, sexual health, and gender needs to be
changed, updated, or added.
Whenever changes in the text and art are necessary to make this book
as up-to-date and accurate as possible, we make them. The next edition
will have more new information and facts than ever before about gender,
reproduction, birth control, abortion, sexual abuse, sexually transmitted
diseases, and many other topics. Since so many preteens and teens go
online to find information and to communicate with others, we have added
more information and facts about the benefits and risks of being online.
We believe this will help readers use the Internet to find truthful, accurate,
responsible, and up-to-date information about sexual health and will help
them protect their own as well as their friends’ and family’s privacy and
personal safety.
We hope that our new edition will help to keep the next generation
of kids and teens healthy and safe. We also hope it will help them make
informed and responsible decisions about sexual health as they continue to
grow up and go through puberty and adolescence.
