SENTENCE
1) DEFINITION

A sentence is the largest independent unit of grammar: it begins with a


capital letter and ends with a period, question mark, od exclamation point. THE
STRUCTURE OF SENTENCE

1) Simple sentence

A simple sentence in grammar has only one main or independent clause


and no dependent or subordinate clauses.

A dependent clause is a group of words with subject and verb. It does not
express a comlete thought so it is not a sentence and can’t stand alone.

An independent clause is a clause that can stand on its own, by it self. It does
not need to be joined to any other clause, because it contains all the information
necessary to be a complete sentence.

Examples of simple sentence


a) Joe went to the store
b) The pizza smells delicious
c) There is a fly in the car with us
d) I’m out of paper for the printer
e) The music is too loud for my ears.
f) boy gave her flowers
g) Anatia is an English teacher.
h) Andrew loved Siti very much.
i) Anita and Budi speak Javanese
j) Can you help my grandma?
k) Don’t be angry.
l) Gita Gutawa composes a great song.
m) He made Anita cry
n) His boss came late today
o) His love song becomes a big hit in this month.

2) Compound Sentence
A compound sentence has at least two independent clauses that have
related ideas. The independent clause can be joined by a coordinating
conjunction (for, and, nor, but or, yet, so).
A coordinating conjunction is conjuction (such as and) that joins two similarly
constructed and/or syntactically equal words, pheases, or clauses within a
sentence, whether they are adjective, adverbs, nouns, or verbs. It’s also called a
coordinating.

Example of FANBOYS.

3) COMPLEX SENTENCE
Complex sentence is a sentenc with an independent clause and a
dependent clause. It’s one of the four main types of sentence structure. In a
complex sentence, the independent clause shares the main information, and the
dependent clause proved detail.
The independent clause has a subject and verb and stand alone as a complete
sentence.
A Subordinating conjunctions is a word that connects an independent
clause to a dependent clause. A subordinating conjunction performs two function
within a sentence. Firts, it illustrates the importance of the independent clause.
Secound, it provides a transition between two ideas in the same sentence.
A relative pronouns is a word that introduces a dependent (or relative) clause
and connects it to an independent clause. The type of relative pronoun used
dependen on what kind of noun is being described.

1) The girl who reads the book is my sister
2) The man whom I met yesterday is my teacher
3) The book wich you read is mine
4) The gril whose house is big is my friend
5) The dress that you are wearing is lovely
6) She is the person who gave you a call last night.
7) The woman whom you met yesterday is my mother.
8) That is the girl whose boy stole my purse.
9) I met a woman that has ten children.
10) My friends like to eat the cookies which I bake.
11) The breads which A bakery sells are not fresh.
12) We live in a ground floor flat that back onto a busy street
13) Do you like the cat that is sleeping underneath the table?
14) She is the person who gave you a call last night.
15) The woman whom you met yesterday is my mother.
16) That is the girl whose boy stole my purse.
17) I met a woman that has ten children.
18) It was the same story which she told me last week.
19) I choose the college that my mother went to.
20) He cut the tree whose branches blocked this view.
21) The girl who has a cute smile is my younger sister.
22) The women who called yesterday wants to buy the house

EXAMPLES OF COMPLEX SENTENCE

 If you want to speak to me, then learn English.


 Metal robots are cool and look tough.
 She returned the computer after she noticed it was damaged.

 Whenever prices goes up, customers buy less products.

 Because I had to catch the train, and as we were short on time, I forgot to
pack my toothbrush for our vacation.

4) COMPOUND COMPLEX SENTENCE

Compound-complex sentences are the most complicated sentences, as their


name implies. A compound-complex sentence has at least two independent
clauses and at least one dependent clause. t.

EXAMPLES OF COMPOUND COMPLEX SENTENCE

1) "The door of the morning room was open as I went through the hall,
and I caught a glimpse of Uncle Tom messing about with his collection
of old silver."
2) "All of us are egotists to some extent, but most of us—unlike the
jerk—are perfectly and horribly aware of it when we make asses of
ourselves."
3) "Those are my principles, and if you don't like them . . . well, I have
others."
4) "The Druids used mistletoe in ceremonies of human sacrifice, but most
of all the evergreen became a symbol of fertility because it flourished
in winter when other plants withered."
5) "We operate under a jury system in this country, and as much as we
complain about it, we have to admit that we know of no better system,
except possibly flipping a coin."
6) Lisa told me that I need to be hurry for the clinic will be closed in 1
hour time.
7) You can choose the place where we will meet or I will decide it myself.

8) I promise to bake some cookies for little Rudy before he is home but I
forget to do so.
