Introduction

To keep any organization successful in the market either globally or locally, it is

important to improve its efficiency and productivity to a high level as maximum as

possible. The work study course helps us as industrial engineers to design a work

system for the optimum utilization of resources. This report is conducted to give a full

understanding to the reader about Work study, which include definition, objective,

methods and applications. Different types of charts/diagrams and available software

will be presented in this report. Finally, a few recommendations are suggested to

improve some area in this field.

The lab session Objectives

The objectives of this laboratory session are as follows:

√ To gain a general background and knowledge about work study definitions, work
study methods, and its applications.
√ To gain a wide description regarding to work study laboratory experiments, tools,
and equipment that will be used in the experiments.
√ To learn the various types of charts and diagrams used in work study and in this
laboratory.

General Information

Definitions
Work study is a systematic examination or investigation of system or method of

organization for work done to improve the utilization of resources like men, machine,

material etc. and setup standard for all activities of organization for improving

productivity [1]. Moreover, the International Labor Organization defined the work

study as “a term used to embrace the techniques of method study and work

measurement which are employed to ensure the best possible use of human and material

resources in carrying out a specified activity” [2].

Objectives
Some of the Objectives of work study:
√ Increase productivity and efficiency
√ Reduce cycle time.
√ Reduce product cost.
√ Reduce labor content.
Methods
Two methods or techniques are considered to study a work in an organization which

are Method study and Work measurement. The first one is to ensures that there is an

increase in overall productivity and profitability of organization [3]. While the second

one is to Standardize and Developed the desired system with lowest cost. Further

illustration based on the definition in the following table:
