ANTONIO PIGAFETTA (first voyage around the world "primo viaggio intorno al mondo")
• March 16 1521, they sailed western course for (LADRONES). Saw an island (YUNAGAN) But they
did not approach the land.
• March 16, same day, sailed to the southward land named (SULUAN)
• To the westward towards the large island named (seilani). (pigafetta called it (ceylon)island of
leyte).
• From soutgwards, they turn to southwest to the small island called ( mazava).
• from there, they sailed northwards to (seilani) and saw 3 small islands.
• From there, they sailed westward, they entered a channel between 2 islands namely ( matan
and subu).
• They sailed down and turn westward and anchored at the town (lavilla subu) were they stayed
many days and obtained provisions and entered into a piece pack with the local king.
• The town of (subu) was on the eastwest directions with the islands of (suluan, and
mazava). There were may shallow places between (suluan and mazava) so they go in round
about way.
In Albo's Log, the location of ( mazava) fits where (limasawa) was. (southern tip of the leyte.)
Albo didn't mention the first mass but only the event were they planted cross on the top of a mountain,
which could be seen three islands to the west and southwest which also fits the southern end of
(limasawa).
Pigafetta's testimony
• Saturday, march 16 1521, magellan sited a high land named (Zamal), 300 westward of the (La
drowned) which now named (marianas).
• March 17 1521, sunday, they landed on another island named (humunu, (humunhon)) located
of 10 degrees north. Lattitude
• Monday, march 18 1521, magellan encountered men and exchange goods and other supplies.
• There were two springs of water and there were some indications that there was gold in these
islands, so magellan renamed it ("the watering piece of good omen" (acgua la di bauniseg in alli)
• Monday, march 25 1521,(the feast of incarnation, also called, the feasf of annunciation, and
therefore (our lady's day) they left (homonhon)
• After leaving (homonhon). Was towards the southwest, between the four island, namely
(cenalo, hiunanghan, ibusan, and albarien)
• (Cenalo) probobly misspelling the italian manuscript for what pigafetta calls (sailon) and Albo
calls (seilani, "island of leyte)
• After they left (homonhon) sailing westeward towards leyte, they followed the leyte coast
zouthward, passing between the island of (ibusson) on their portside and (hinunangan bay) and
they continued southward the. Turning westward to (mazaua)
• Thusday, march 28 1521, they landed on (mazaua) and remained there for 7 days.
• Thursday april 4 1521, they left ( mazaua) and their route took them pass 5 islands namely
(ceylon, bohol, canighan, baibai, abd gatighan).
• At (gatighan), they sailed westward, to the 3 islands of camotes group namely ( poto, pasehan,
ponson,) and sailed southwards to (subu, " cebu")
Albo and Pigadetta's testimonies concideds but pigafetta gave more details about day and dates than
Albo
•He gave some trinkets to the natives and pass the night
2nd day
•Magellan went to a shore near the island to reach the king of Mazaua
•He gave another gift as exchange and went to the small islands near the shore
3rd Day
•Pigafetta and his companion spent the previous evening feasting and
4th day
•Magellan Called his priest and his men to prepare the mass
•He landed 50 men to join the mass and the mass started
•After the mass, they went and returned to the ship for a morning meal
•In the afternoon, Magellan and the Native king managed to plant a cross on the
•After they planted the cross, Magellan asked and wished to go to Zubu and depart
•The king Agreed to lead Magellan to Zubu but in exchage, his men will harvest some crops
5th day
•Magellan and the king had a day off by celebrating with themselves by drinking.
6th and the 7th day
•Magellan's men started to work witht the crops for two days.
final day
•Magellan and his men finally left the island and head out to Cebu
