Culture and Societies (1500-1800) Project

Students are given one of the following societies to study in depth:

1. Colonies of North America
2. Tokugawa Shogunate (Japan)
3. Ming Dynasty (China)
4. Ottoman Empire
5. The Great Age of Monarchy (Europe)

TOPIC: How does society impact history?

Scenario:
You are historians preparing for a presentation on your selected culture and society. You
must prepare a display with both 2D and 3D materials and give a lecture about the culture. Select
one role to take that will help your group complete the project:
a. Leader – You make sure that requirements are completed on time and ensure that
everyone is actively completing their tasks. You lead the conduct of your team meetings
and you can also help anyone that needs help. You should also speak with the teacher
when problems arise.
b. Researcher – You are not the only researcher – all members of your team should do
research. You do the majority of the writing. You are also in charge of finding answers to
questions your group does not know yet.
c. Artist and Scribe - You will be in charge of any writing on the display board and keep track
of any notes from everyone’s research. You will be in charge of the design for your display.

Guidelines:
A. In your oral presentation, be sure to include the following:
1. Background of Culture
2. Hierarchy and Definition of Roles
3. Timelines and Major Figures
4. Maps with Location
5. Language, Art, Clothing, and Food
6. Religion and Traditions
7. Significant Innovations
8. Rise and Fall (???)

B. In your visual display, be sure to include:

1. 2D: This will be a display board like the one used for science fairs. It should contain the
following information:
a. Title
b. Timeline
c. Cultural Artifacts and Pictures
d. People and Clothing
e. Descriptions and Captions for Pictures

2. 3D: This will be up for your group to decide. Options include:
a. Diorama
b. 3D Maps
c. Costumes on Figurines/Dolls
d. Cardboard Structures
e. Other Artifacts (pottery, art pieces, etc.)
