1 Exponentials and Logarithms


1. Determine the subset in C for which each of the following functions are differentiable:
(a) f (z) = exp(2z + i)
(b) g(z) = exp(z 2 ).
2. Determine the image of each of the following sets under the complex exponential map-
ping:
(a) the horizontal line y = −1
(b) the vertical line x = 2
(c) the infinite strip 1 < x ≤ 2
(d) the rectangle 0 ≤ x ≤ ln 2, −π/4 ≤ y ≤ π/2.
3. Find the principal values of the following logarithms:
(a) Log(−e2 )
(b) Log(1 + i)4
(c) Log(3 − 4i).
4. Find all complex values of z satisfying the given equations:
(a) exp(1/z) = −1
(b) exp(z − 1) = ie3 .
5. Find a domain in which the given function f is differentiable, and then find the derivative:
(a) f (z) = 3z 2 − exp(2iz) + iLog(z)
