Proposed Reading Intervention (Per Grade Level)

School: VICENTE P. TRINIDAD NATIONAL HIGH SCHOOL School Year: 2019-2020
Title of the Intervention: REPEATED READINGS

Rationale:
This intervention is useful for slow readers. Students read repeatedly short passages until they achieve a satisfactory level
of fluency. In this way, they spend less time on reading the words and they can focus on understanding the content. Students
are told that they are going to be asked comprehension questions. The optimal number of repetitions appears to be four.
The main objective of the intervention is to improve the reading performance of Grade 7 students who were identified
as Frustration Readers after taking the Philippine Informal Reading Inventory (Phil-IRI). English teachers’ anecdotal records and
class performance will also be considered in choosing the participants. With the use of non-electronic books reading
passages. The students will undergo an eight week intervention which will improve their reading levels and will help them to
develop their reading skills across all the subject areas.
The REPEATED READINGS intervention also involves monitoring of students’ progress throughout the program through various
means of assessment.

General Objectives: Improve the reading level of students who were diagnosed as Frustration Readers in the Phil-IRI Pre-test.

Title of the Intervention: Progressive Learning Maze (Grade 8)

Rationale:
This intervention provides the lessons and worksheets into three levels: Basic, Intermediate and Advanced and allows the learners to work
at their own pace.
The main objective of the Basic level is to lay foundation to build up a learner’s confidence in tackling comprehension. In the
Intermediate Level, the lesson and worksheets encourage higher-level thinking and understanding. The Advance level challenges the learner to
think beyond their ideas presented on worksheets.
The wide variety of themes and genres also serve to widen learner’s exposure to the different text types which are currently taught in schools.
The different questioning techniques aim to develop learner’s comprehension and inference skills. These Thinking questions are incorporated to
allow learner to exercise his opinions and make sound conclusions.
The worksheets may also enrich one’s vocabulary to aid them in writing, reading and comprehension exercises.
The intervention will improve the reading ability of the learners and can make a great impact on class performance across all learning areas
of the curriculum, including writing skills, it’s important to provide adequate strategy training as early as possible. Ideally remediation is tailored to
the individual student’s needs, particularly when a learning difficulty is involved.
The learners will have greater confidence in answering comprehension tests and may show distinctive progress with their reading and
comprehension skills.

General Objectives: Improve the reading level of “Struggling Readers” as identified through Kaplan test.

Title of the Intervention: Take Action on Punctuation!

Rationale:
This intervention provides lessons and worksheets to improve not only the learners’ grammar awareness, writing and speaking
skills but the reading ability as well. We all know that in the proper use of punctuation marks, we can convey the meaning of a
certain line, phrase or sentence.
It will also boost the confidence of the learners in comprehending long texts because it is anchored in different core
competencies in English. The use of different strategies such as drills and board works, Reading log/journals will be an effective
strategy to meet the learners’ needs, especially nowadays that teachers and learners tend to forget the proper usage of
punctuation marks mainly because of using ICT and social media sites.

General Objectives: Develop students’ confidence in comprehending lengthy reading texts through proper observance of
punctuation as means of interpreting meanings
