• Due Date: September 19 or 20 (Your instructor will tell you the exact date and time.)
• Note: All problem, section, and page references are to the course textbook, which is the 7th edition
of Calculus: Single Variable by Hughes-Hallett, Gleason, McCallum, et al.
• Consult the “Doing Team Homework” and “Team HW Tutorial” links on the course website for
guidelines on doing Team Homework.
• Rotate roles and include a reporter’s page each week.
• Show complete work.

1. For the following statements, assume that any function given is continuous and has continuous
derivative.
For each statement, decide whether the statement is always true. Then either

• explain why the statement must be true, or

• give an example of a function (either a formula or a sketch of a graph) that shows that there
are functions for which the statement is false.

over-estimate, and the other will be an under-estimate for the integral of the function over that
interval.

2. Mutant Grasshoppers have just shown up in Smallville, a town that previously had no grasshoppers.
Since the grasshoppers are mutated, their population changes very peculiarly. The natural rate of
change in their population (that is, the birth rate minus the death rate) is g(t) thousands of
grasshoppers per day, where t is the number of days after September 10th. The graph of g(t) is
shown below. Note that the area of A is 4.4, and the area of B is 26.

(a) What is the average value of g(t) between 0 and 10? What does this mean in the context of
the problem?
(b) On September 10th, there are 18.4 thousand grasshoppers. Write an expression using one or
more definite integrals that expresses how many grasshoppers there will be on September 20th.
Calculate this value.
(c) The town calls in Conner, the traveling Killer Wasp Trainer. He can make it to town on
September 17th, and will bring wasps that each kill 200 Grasshoppers per day. The town
wants all of the wasps gone by September 20th, and Conner charges per day. How many wasps
should he bring so that all the grasshoppers are gone exactly by the deadline? (Note that since
the grasshoppers are mutated, g(t) is not a↵ected by the presence of the wasps.)
(d) Suppose Conner brings exactly as many wasps as needed in (c). Let R(t) be the total number
of grasshoppers (in thousands) t days after September 10th. Carefully sketch the graph of R(t).
Make sure the following features of the function R(t) are displayed clearly in your sketch:
• where R(t) is and is not di↵erentiable;
• where R(t) is increasing, decreasing, or constant;
• the concavity of R(t).

3. In Issue 1 of the Derivative Girl comic, our hero learns that the villain, Darth Integrator, has
planted a device in the nearby park. The device makes anyone near it forget all their Calculus 1
knowledge! Fortunately, Derivative Girl knows the shape of the park can be modeled by the
function shown below, where x is miles east, and p(x) is miles north from the southwest-most corner
of the park.

(a) She also knows the function is given by:

2 (x 2) + 2a 0  x  34 ,
p(x) =
a(x 52 )2 3 5
4  x  2.

As she gets closer to the device, she forgets the exact value of a. If the total area of the park is
7
24 of a square mile, what is the value of a?
(b) Derivative Girl can duplicate herself, but the copy only has a sixth of her power and speed.
She starts at the southwest corner of the park, and duplicates herself to aid in the search for
the device. We want to use the line through the origin so that 1/7 of the park’s total area lies
below the line, so Derivative Girl and her copy don’t cover the same area when searching.

Write an equation to find the value of c, where the line through (0, 0) and (c, p(c)) breaks the
park into the desired two pieces. Find an approximate value for c using a calculator.
