Bitumen. Tar and Their Products Sectional Committee. PCD 6

FOREWORD

This Indian Standard was adopted by the Bureau of Indian Standards. after the draft finalized by the Bitumen, Tar
and Their Products Sectional Committee had been approved by the Petroleum. Coal and Related Products Division
Council.

Paving bitumen conforming to IS 73 : 2006 'Paving bitume~ ~ Specificati cn (third revision)' is being manufactured
in the country to satisfy the wide range of paving applications. High traffic intensity. heavy axle loads and variation
in climatic conditions are the key factors responsible for premature failure of the bituminous pavement constructed
using the conventional paving grade bitumen.

To overcome the problem of occasional premature failure of the bituminous pavernent, use of multi-grade bitumen
has been very promising and gaining importance throughout the world . Multi-grade bitumen has indicated superior
performance at high and low temperatures compared to corresponding grades of conventional paving bitumen in
the studies carried out in India and abroad.

Multi-grade bitumen performs better than conventional bitumen over a wide climatic range in comparison to
conventional paving bitumen. and is manufactured through control of composition to resist pavement deformation
at high temperature and cracking at low temperature. The multi-grade bitumen provides improved deformation
resistance at high service temperature. while retaining a desired level of flexibility at low temperature. It bridges
the performance gap between conventional paving bitumen and modified bitumen.

This standard is one of the series of Indian Standards on bitumen. Other standards so far published in this series are:

73: 2006 Paving bitumen - Specification (third revision)
217: 1988 Specification for cutback bitumen (second revision)

NOTES

I The penetration index may be calculated from the value of penetrations at two different temperatures (25°C and 4°C) using follow ing
relationship:
Penetration index (PI) = 20 - 500 A
I +50A

Log Pen @ 25°C - Log Pen @ 4°C

where A = -..:--------=---_
25°C _4°C

2 The penetration ratio may be calculated from the values of penetration at two different temperatures (25°C and 4°C) using
follow ing relationship:

Pen at 4°C. 200 g, 60 x 100

Penetrat ion ratio
Pen at 25°C. 100 g, 5

3 Ageing Index can be calculated by dividing viscosity value at 600C of residue from thin film oven test (see IS 9382) by the
viscosily value of neal bitumen at 600C.

" Penetration index controls change in propert ies over a range of temperature. PI is used to give a good approximation of the multi-grade
behaviour accepted globally .

" Ageing index is a measure of resistance to age hardening of bitumen and defined ratio of viscosity at600C for oxidized bitumen (TFOT)
and neal bitumen . .
