Philosophical and Psycho-social Implications of the Law of Positive Discipline and

Teacher
(Philosophical Foundations of Education)

I truly believe that a teacher should not condemn on the philosophies of others. A true
teacher is a philosophy maker; creative enough to hone students according on what they
believe. In this manner, there are various ways in teaching or behaving students, depending on
what does the teacher is capable of. Reinforcements and punishments are only a given choice
for a certain teacher, and certain manner should be recognized. To support this statement,
according to the Press and Public Affairs Bureau, the House Committee on Welfare of Children
approved the bill to House Bill 516 and 6955, which seeks to promote a positive and non-violent
discipline of children, to protect them from physical and non-physical forms of punishment. This
proposed bill is more likely a positive discipline rather than establishing punishment for violence
against children. Question is, how does this bill implicates in terms of teacher-student
relationship, parent-teacher relationship, teacher community partnerships and students attitude
towards the teacher and classroom?

Positive Discipline for me is also an efficient and productive way of behaving students. It
is one of the techniques that the teachers should practice since it produces a good remark to
the students. Also, it avoids physical and emotional destruction to a child that might affect not
only to the present of that child, as well as his/her future. Punishments that require physical
harm could lead the students to improper attitude towards the teacher and to classrooms.
Those hurtful words that the teacher used to reprimand a child could also one of the factors
why the child behaves in a strange way. We tend to forgot that words are too powerful when
being said. Being a pre-service teacher, we should definitely aware about the difference
between punishments and positive discipline.

The implication of this Positive Discipline to the relationship between teachers and to the
students is that it is more interactive and more engaged. If we cite a philosophy here, John
Dewey’s Pragmatism correlates the idea of this discipline. They are benefiting to each other
when using this kind of discipline, like for example, students are more likely to respect the
teacher while teachers are beyond grateful that their students are being conditioned in a proper
discipline. The advantage is students could actually see the essence of behaving themselves in
a good manner. They are encouraged to go to school and more active in discussion.
A child has two mothers, one at home and in school. In accordance of parent-teacher
relationship, while the students learn in classroom, they are eventually applying it at home.
Parents should also aware to this, because, first and foremost, behaviour of a child is acquired
through their environment, and that is home. Students who misbehaved the most are the child
that has no proper parenting at home. Parents, as well as teachers are responsible for a child’s
growth and behaviour. Using positive discipline, students are not being repressed in an
inappropriate way.
Lastly, in terms of student attitude towards the teacher and classroom by the use of
Positive Discipline, just what I have said earlier, the student tend to more active and engaged
because Positive Discipline can make a child’s confidence grow. They respect the teachers and
also see the house rules as fair and they are less likely to complain about it.

Given all the implications, I therefore conclude that a proper teaching is not about filling
up the empty vessel brain of the child, but also filled them to be better individual. There is so
much to talk regarding with this way of behaving a student. Amending child’s misbehaviour is
not always through harsh verbal punishment and physical penalty. Every child needs
encouragements, they are being educated to not just find information and learn but also they
are disciplined inside the classroom. I am recommending all types of techniques in Positive
Discipline to all teachers. The essence behind this bill is not just for avoiding violent physical
harm, but also to be humane to your students.
