ASSIGNMENT-3

CV-1301
Instruction:
Kindly go through the lecture notes and slides. Additionally you should browse
internet and google in order to make your answers more crisp and with
additional information beyond your notes and slides.
Assignments must be submitted on paper on the prescribed date of submission
clearly indicating your Name and registration no. and email in the first page.
1. A long solid cylinder of radius 0.80 m hinged at a point A(Figure below) is used as an
automatic gate, when the water level reaches 5 meter, it opens by turning about the hinge at
point A. Determine (a) the hydrostatic pressure force acting on the cylinder and its line of
action when the gate opens (b) the weight of the cylinder per meter per meter length
The height of water reservoir is controlled by a cylindrical gate hinged to the reservoir. The
hydrostatic force on the cylinder and the weight of the cylinder per m length are to be
determined. Assuming friction at the hinge is negligible, atmospheric pressure acts on both
sides of the gate and thus it cancels out. Density of water is 1000 kg/m3

2. A typical differential manometer is attached to two sections A and B in a horizontal pipe

through which water is flowing a steady rate (See figure below). The deflection of mercury
in the manometer is 0.6 m with the level nearer A being the lower one as shown in the
figure. Calculate the difference in pressure between Section A and B. Take densities of water
and mercury as 1000 kg/m3 and 13570 kg/m3 respectively.

3. An inclined tube manometer measures the gauge pressure ps of a system S (below Figure).
The reservoir and tube diameters of the manometer are 50 mm and 5 mm respectively. The
inclination angle of the tube is 30°. What will be the percentage error in measuring ps if the
reservoir deflection is neglected?

4. Oil of specific gravity 0.800 acts on a vertical triangular area whose apex is in the oil surface
(Figure for required information and guidance is depicted below). The triangle is isosceles
of 3 m high and 4 m wide. A vertical rectangular area of 2 m high is attached to the 4 m base
of the triangle and is acted upon by water. Find the magnitude and point of action of the
resultant hydrostatic force on the entire area.

5. The plane gate (Figure as shown below) weighs 2000 N/m length normal to the plane of the
figure, with its center of gravity 2 m from the hinge O. Find h as a function of θ for
equilibrium of the gate.

6. A parabolic gate AB is hinged at A and latched at B as shown in the following figure. The
gate is 3 meter wide. Determine the components of net hydrostatic force on the gate exerted
by water.

7. An aluminum cube 150 mm on a side is suspended by a string in oil and water as shown in
the figure below. The cube is submerged with half of it being in oil and the other half in
water. Find the tension in the string if the specific gravity of oil is 0.80 and the specific
weight of aluminum is 25.93 kN/m3.

8. A rectangular barge of width b and the submerged depth of H has its center of gravity at the
water line. Find the metacentric height in terms of b/H, and hence show that for stable
equilibrium of the barge b/H≥√6.

9. A solid hemisphere (figure given below) of density ρ and radius r floats with its plane base
immersed in a liquid of density ρl (ρl>ρ). Show that the equilibrium is stable and the
metacentric height is,
3 𝜌𝑙
𝑟 ( − 1)
8 𝜌

10. An 80 mm diameter composite solid cylinder (Figure as shown below for your guidance)
consists of an 80 mm diameter 20 mm thick metallic plate having specific gravity 4.0
attached at the lower end of an 80 mm diameter wooden cylinder of specific gravity 0.80.
Find the limits of the length of the wooden portion so that the composite cylinder can float
in stable equilibrium in water with its axis vertical.
