Family Essay
The Caribbean is characterized by matrifocality. Is this a true assessment of the
Caribbean? This essay was submitted by user: sasa09 General Comments on sasa09
Submitted Essay • This essay was well written. • The candidate understood the
question and interpreted the question satisfactorily. • The Candidate referred to
the relevant sociological theorists as it relates to the question. • Since the
question spoke about the Caribbean in general, the candidate used her initative to
confine her case study support to one country in this case Jamaica - by citing
relevant data relating to the issue (matrifocality). Altogether the essay was
coherent. Suggestions for an enhanced essay: The candidate could have included data
from one or two more other Caribbean territories to drive home the point that
matrifocality is prevalent in the Caribbean. • In 1997 Mondesire and Dunn noted the
percentage of female headed households in various countries: Antigua 41.5%, Bahamas
35.8%, Barbados 45.3%, Grenada 42.7%,
Jamaica 38.0% and Trinidad & Tobago 28.1%.
