These days between the just commemorated 300 anniversary of his death and the last days in process for his possible
canonization, one fact is undeniable in the life and work of Padre Eusebio Francisco Kino (1645-1711): the rich experience of a
religious Bi-Borderlands life and a multicultural practice, both favoring cultural diversity and dialogue between all individuals
and all peoples. Such an experience was present during his historical era and continues to be alive today at the social, cultural,
and spiritual level. That is, it was and it is still possible to build social harmony along the Borderlands via affirming and
practicing religious principles as well as knowledge from the social sciences and humanities in order to improve the human
condition at various levels.
As seen shown by Dr. Peter Horwath in this new chronology divided into three periods, Padre Kino was born in a border
region populated by Ladins, Germans, and Italians, which forged in his character from 1645 to 1678 a European border
experience similar to the one between Arizona and Sonora, that is, between the American Southwest and Northern Mexico. In
fact, although he was born and raised on the predominately Romanic Trentino side of the linguistic border region, Kino was
educated, on the other side, in the German educational centers of the Holy Roman Empire. At the time, the ducal city of
Munich and the imperial city of Vienna were a magnet that attracted artists, architects, painters, composers, military men, and
other professionals, and Kino’s father wanted his son to educate himself in the German-speaking world north of the Alps.
vii
His interest in becoming a missionary “to save souls for Christ” and “out of love for God and neighbor” came early in his
youth from reading about the martyrdom in Japan of Carolus Spinola, S.J., and hearing of the missionary activities in China of
his “relative” Martino Martini, S.J., of the Austrian Province. His definite decision to become a Jesuit happened when, upon
praying to Saint Francis Xavier for help, he recovered from a believed terminal illness. In preparation, he earned the
equivalent of a doctoral degree at the University of Freiburg in Breisgau, and at the University of Ingolstadt he acquired the
special scientific knowledge to be a missionary in the Far East. Still, such continent did not become his eventual destination.
Assigned instead to New Spain, Kino found complete fulfillment in the Pimería Alta. Today, he is celebrated as “the Apostle to
Sonora and Arizona.”
However, upon leaving his beloved multicultural Europe, and its Ladin, German, and Italian borderlands, Padre Kino had
to travel two-and-a-half years before reaching the New World. On March 1678, he left Munich, passing Genova, and reaching
Cádiz on July 1680. In Spain he learned to speak Spanish and changed the spelling of his name from Chini to Kino. Padre Kino
arrived in Veracruz, New Spain, in May 1681, crossing Mexico City in June, and reaching his final destination, Sinaloa, on
December of the same year.

know as the periphery. Since all men were spiritually brothers, Padre Kino took his work as a peacemaker seriously: not only
did he create peace and cooperative relationships between some bitterly warring native peoples, but he established peaceful
relations with the Spanish military (ever ready to resort to punitive action).
Won over via arguments based on faith, the equality of all men before God, and an exemplary ethic in the service of
others, but above all by learning about the “Good God” from the missionaries, the New World peoples would become
successfully integrated into the new world system, particularly via cattle raising, new methods in farming and irrigation, an
exchange in fruits and vegetables, and architecture. Having as a principle the rejection of military conquest, such integration
was based on recognizing that the autochthonous people had natural rights and that they should be persuaded, on the part of
missionaries, with love and tolerance so that the indigenous peoples would subjectively agree to form part of a new
international system as well as interact, as spiritual brothers, with the new European immigrants now in the Americas, who in
the majority had fled from economic marginalization and social conflict in their own homelands. In such religious and
humanistic work, Padre Kino was following the steps of other great defenders of the autochthonous American peoples, such
as, Dominican missionaries Antonio de Montesinos (c. 1475-1540) and Bartolomé de las Casas (1476-1566), Viceroy Antonio
Mendoza (c. 1490-1552), Bishop Juan de Zumárraga (1468-1584), the nun and poet Sor Juana Inés de la Cruz (1651-1695), and
Jesuit Antonio Ruiz de Montoya (1585-1652), who worked among the Guaraní people in Paraguay.
viii
From the cultural syncretic labor accomplished by Padre Kino and his fellow Jesuits in the Northwest of New Spain, a
new Bi-Borderlands society would rise that to this day continues to be present but exponentially multiplied. Made possible by
a transnational experience where 25 million legal crossings occur yearly, such society is characterized by an advanced agro-
industrial development, a highly developed technology, and a quantitatively superior population to that one found at the end of
the XVII-century. In such Bi-Borderlands region, various missions originally founded by Padre Kino continue to shine on the
horizon and to serve the border peoples. As a significant symbolic gesture, a bust of Padre Kino in Washington D.C. identifies
him as an illustrious man from Arizona-Sonora and his statute at the Capitol in Phoenix seals the friendship between the two
border states geographically located side by side.
With three chapters filled with short paragraphs, a time graph on each page which features the historical year and the
age of Padre Kino from 0 to 66 years, multiple maps, drawings, paintings and symbols, with an addition of 29 footnotes, a list of
missions, churches, rancherías and visitas, and a list of works cited and consulted, this chronology offers and promises a rich
reading on the life and work of a Bi-Borderlands Padre Kino plus detailed and illustrated knowledge on his life, his exemplary
experiences and his religious principles. Undoubtedly, this chronology by Dr. Peter Horwath will transform the figure of the
Jesuit Kino within colonial studies in Latin America, the American Southwest, and in Chicano Studies. At the same time, it
offers a model to practice a Bi-Borderlands life and to build harmony among the peoples of the border as was done by Padre

Fr. Kino visited a Papago ranchería near what is today Tucson and
called the place Santa Catalina Cuitchibaque.
The name Santa Catalina, or Catarina, was applied by Padre Kino
to the mountains bordering the valley to the north and east.
Such name lasted until 1865.
Since it was customary for missionaries to name localities for the
saint´s day on which such places were first visited, it may well be
that Fr. Kino gave these mountains their name on the same
day (St. Catherine’s Day) on which he christened the Indian
village nearby.
