LEARNING STYLES OF STUDENTS IN UBIHAN HIGH SCHOOL

I. Introduction and Rationale

All students are created equally and differently. Learning styles have a big
contribution to the academic performance of the students. Learning style speaks on
how students learn differently, absorbs and comprehend the topic and how would
they react and cope up with every lessons and situation given to them.

Each students has different learning styles capability. According to the Multiple
INTELLIGENCE (IM) theory of Gardner states that there are seven different ways of
learning anything, and therefore there are “seven intelligences”: bodily/kinaesthetic,
interpersonal, intrapersonal, logical/mathematical, music/rhythmic, verbal/linguistic
and visual spatial. Every styles affects and had an effects on the potential of every
students and has an impact on their academic performance, it is believed that the
children all over the world have their own individual variations in modes of perceiving,
remembering and thinking ways of taking in, storing, transforming and solving
problems (Efiong, 2005). Each learning styles may affect and have an effect on the
learning of the students inside the four corners of their classroom. It may also be the
guide on how they will learn. Learning styles are not differences of ability but rather
preferences for processing certain information (D T. Willingham, E M. Hughes).

Ubihan High School is an integrated school combined with Junior and Senior
High School, with one hundred seventy (170) learners. Junior High School with 35
Grade 7, 38 Grade 8, 25 Grade 9 and 43 Grade 10 students, on the other hand Senior
High School with General Academic Strand has 12 students in Grade 11 and 23
students in Grade 12 that will be cover by this study.
Awareness of the individual learning styles can help them maximize his/her
potential in their academic performance. Teachers on the other hand must be able to
know and understand well the different learning style and able to have an effective
teaching strategy for each styles and to boost learner’s potentials as well.

This is why the researcher conduct this study on different learning styles of
Students in Ubihan High School. The researcher would like to determine what kind of
learning styles the students have so that the teachers would be able to adjust in every
learners styles and able to execute different strategies as well as instructional
materials that will fit with each learning styles and to see its impact on the academic
performance of the students.
