1. a) Explain the relevance of different modes of transportation used in 3×5


Nepal.
b) Describe how roads are classified by the department of Roads
(Nepal).
c) Explain the method of selection of Best alignment of roads.
2. a) What are the objectives of highway geometric design? List the 7
various geometric elements to be considered in highway design?
b) Calculate the absolute minimum and ruling minimum radius of 8
horizontal curve for a design speed of 80 kmph.
3. a) What is super elevation? Explain the methods of attaining super 7
elevation.
b) A sag curve is formed by a descending grade of 1 in 25 meeting an 8
ascending grade of 1 in 30. Design the length of sag curve to fulfil
both comfort condition and head light sight distance requirements for
a design speed of 60 KPH. Assume allowable rate of change of
centrifugal acceleration C=0.6m/sec3.
4. a) What are the special point to be consider in the alignment of hill 8
road? Explain them in brief.
b) What are the requirements of good highway drainage system? 7
Discuss importance of drainage in a hill road.
5. a) The maximum quantity of water to be discharge by the two side 8
drains on a highway section is 1.4 m3/sec. Design the side drains for
the following conditions
Silty loam, maximum velocity of flow = 0.8 m/sec

b) Explain the design principles of various components of surface 7
drainage structures.
6. a) Design bituminous mix by Marshall Method. 8
b) What is Cutback bitumen? Explain the test to determine softening 7
point of bitumen.
