Sacrament of Holy Baptism for Josephine Pearl Ormsby
INTRODUCTION
Pray always. Do not lose heart. This is the encouragement of the Christ of
the gospel today. Persistence in our every encounter with the divine will be
blessed. Wrestle with the word. Remember your baptism again and again.
Come regularly to Christ’s table. Persistence in our every encounter with
the divine will be blessed.
CHILDREN are always welcome to our Worship Service. Rainbow bags and
a cry room are available. A staffed nursery is also available if needed. An
usher will gladly provide you with assistance.
As a worship courtesy, we ask that you please turn off or set to vibrate all
cellular telephones and pagers during the worship service.
We ask that all present today please fill out the Attendance and Communion
registration card found in your bulletin and place it in the offering plate so
that we may record your presence with us.
PRAYER UPON ENTERING THE PEW
Almighty God, with a mother’s love and a father’s care you have blessed us
with the joy and responsibility of children. As we bring them up, give us
gracious love, calm strength, and patient wisdom, that we may teach them
to love whatever is just and true and good, following the example of Jesus
Christ, our Savior. Amen.

HOLY BAPTISM
Josephine Pearl, her sponsors Tim and Jennifer Laubert: her parents,
John and Dianna; and her brother, Jackson, gather with the ministers at
the font. The assembly is seated at the conclusion of the hymn.
In baptism our gracious heavenly Father frees us from sin and death by
joining us to the death and resurrection of our Lord Jesus Christ. We are
born children of a fallen humanity; by water and the Holy Spirit we are
reborn children of God and made members of the church, the body of
Christ. Living with Christ and in the communion of saints, we grow in
faith, love, and obedience to the will of God.

bring them to the word of God and the holy supper,
teach them the Lord's Prayer, the Creed, and the Ten Commandments,
place in their hands the holy scriptures,
 and nurture them in faith and prayer,
so that your children may learn to trust God,
proclaim Christ through word and deed,
care for others and the world God made,
and work for justice and peace.

I ask you to profess your faith in Christ Jesus, reject sin, and confess the
faith of the church.
Do you renounce the devil and all the forces that defy God, the powers of
this world that rebel against God, and the ways of sin that draw you from
God?
John and Dianna: I renounce them.

Do you believe in Jesus Christ, the Son of God?
I believe in Jesus Christ, God’s only Son, our Lord, who was conceived
by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius
Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried; he descended to the dead.
On the third day he rose again; he ascended into heaven, he is seated at
the right hand of the Father, and he will come to judge the living and
the dead.
Do you believe in God the Holy Spirit?
I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic church, the communion of
saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life
everlasting.
Water is poured into the font.
The presiding minister begins the thanksgiving:
The Lord be with you.

Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.
It is right to give our thanks and praise.
We give you thanks, O God, for in the beginning your Spirit moved over
the waters and by your Word you created the world, calling forth life in
which you took delight. Through the waters of the flood you delivered
Noah and his family, and through the sea you led your people Israel from
slavery into freedom. At the river your Son was baptized by John and
anointed with the Holy Spirit. By the baptism of Jesus' death and
resurrection you set us free from the power of sin and death and raise us up
to live in you.
Pour out your Holy Spirit, the power of your living Word, that those who
are washed in the waters of baptism may be given new life. To you be
given honor and praise through Jesus Christ our Lord, in the unity of the
Holy Spirit, now and forever. Amen.

The presiding minister continues:

Let us pray.
We give you thanks, O God, that through water and the Holy Spirit you
give your daughters and sons new birth, cleanse them from sin, and raise
them to eternal life.

Laying both hands on the head of the newly baptized, the minister prays:
Sustain Josephine Pearl with the gift of your Holy Spirit: the spirit of
wisdom and understanding, the spirit of counsel and might, the spirit of
knowledge and the fear of the Lord, the spirit of joy in your presence, both
now and forever. Amen.

The presiding minister marks the sign of the cross on Josephine’s forehead.
As the sign of the cross is made with oil, the minister says:
Josephine Pearl, child of God, you have been sealed by the Holy Spirit and
marked with the cross of Christ forever. Amen.

A lighted candle is given to a sponsor as a representative of the

congregation says:
Let your light so shine before others that they may see your good works
and glorify your Father in heaven.

The ministers and the baptismal group face the assembly. A representative
of the congregation leads the assembly in the welcome.
Let us welcome the newly baptized.
We welcome you into the body of Christ and into the mission we share:
join us in giving thanks and praise to God and bearing God's creative
and redeeming word to all the world.

O Lord God, tireless guardian of your people, you are always ready to hear Refrain:

GOSPEL: Luke 18:1-8
Jesus tells a parable of a hateful judge who is worn down by a widow’s
pleas. Jesus is calling God’s people to cry out for justice and deliverance.
For if an unethical judge will ultimately grant the plea of a persistent
widow, how much more will God respond to those who call.

Then Jesus told them a parable about their need to pray always and not to
lose heart. 2He said, “In a certain city there was a judge who neither feared
God nor had respect for people. 3In that city there was a widow who kept
coming to him and saying, ‘Grant me justice against my opponent.’ 4For a
while he refused; but later he said to himself, ‘Though I have no fear of
God and no respect for anyone, 5yet because this widow keeps bothering
me, I will grant her justice, so that she may not wear me out by continually
coming.’ ” 6And the Lord said, “Listen to what the unjust judge says. 7And
will not God grant justice to his chosen ones who cry to him day and night?
Will he delay long in helping them? 8I tell you, he will quickly grant justice
to them. And yet, when the Son of Man comes, will he find faith on earth?”
