What prompt you to begin or buy a business?

The 2 single most things that prompt me to open a business was corporate lay-offs and wealth.
One, witnessing and experiencing being laid-off from a job puts a continuous fear with any
current or future employer of being let go due to “restructuring.” The second is wealth.
Establishing a legacy for our family and providing financial security is the goal.

What kind of problems did you anticipate before you started?

Advertising. Not having much expertise in marketing, we knew it would be a struggle to gain
new customers in the beginning.

What kind of problems do you deal with in the daily operations of your business?

Running a retail Pharmacy, we accept all insurances from customers to pay for their
medications. Daily, we have to call insurances for rejected claims to get the correct information
to process payment to the Pharmacy.

Time management. Working the store during regular business hours does not leave room for
administrative work leading up to long hours per day.

What type of employees do you have (part-time, full-time, hourly wage, salary, etc.)?

This is a small local retail Pharmacy, we have 2 full-time employees and a marketing rep.

Does the different type of employees have different positives/negatives to you as an employer?
Please explain.

I’m sure there’s more positives than negatives but our lines of communication remain open due
to our small staff.

Before starting your business, did you have a business plan?

Yes, with marketing, funding, competition, logistics, community solutions, and projections
components within.

What do you find most rewarding about owning your own business?

We did not purchase or acquire another building. We leased a space where we had to build the
Pharmacy from scratch hiring an architect, contractors, inspectors, and vendors to complete
the construction. Building something from scratch, watching it operate and grow is satisfying
feeling of accomplishment.
As a small business owner, do you believe you have any advantages over large businesses or
corporations? If yes, what? If no, why not?

Yes, we a have a significant advantage over the large retail Pharmacies (Walmart, CVS,
Walgreens, etc.) because our volume is low enough to concentrate on personal services.

What advice would you offer to anyone who is thinking about starting a business of his or her
own?

One, get guidance or advice from any owners in the same field before opening. Two, make sure
your finances are over calculated to leave room for any mishaps.
