DESIGN AND FABRICATION OF AN ADJUSTABLE

MULTI NUT TIGHTER AND REMOVER FOR A CAR


TYRE

Abstract:
In Automobile industry, Adjustable wheel opener is a special purpose tool made to
open/close all the nuts of a wheel in single operation with less effort. Although various
methods are used for opening nuts, they require a lot of effort to open a single nut and also
time consuming because you should open/close single nut separately. The main objective of
the project is to develop a single tool which is used to use to open multiple nuts in single
operation which can also be used during assembling and dismantling of wheels in
automobiles.

Introduction:
Today’s world is of the fast and rapid process. Everybody wants to save time and effort by
inventing some newer technique or mechanism and implement them in the daily life. The
main objective of this project is to minimize the labor work in tightening or losing the nuts If
we consider a four-wheeler removing and replacing the car wheel is a very frequent job
performed by the worker. Normally each of the four nuts are removed/tightened individually
by applying the spanner. But with the help of the mechanism developed we can loosen or
tighten all four nuts at a time and at the single stroke of the motor operated lever. This
project focuses on the minimization of human effort and time consumed by using multiple
ratchet. This is achieved by developing a planetary gear mechanism which reduces the time
and effort in detaching the nuts from the car wheel.

Literature Survey:
1. Gears are used for transmitting power between non parallel intersecting shafts, so bevel
gear is used for actuating the four socket spanner at a time. 4 driven gears and a pinion gear
are used. Universal joints are used to make the mechanism adjustable a pinion gear is
connected with 4 driven gears. A lock nut is used for connecting main shaft to desired
position. When pinion is rotated all other gears are rotated which in turns provide rotary
motion to socket spanner, this helps to tighten or loosen the bolts. The adjustment for
removing the bolts which are having different PCD are achieved by universal joints.

2. As the standard of living in India has increased, most of the families have at least on
vehicle, typically car to move easily & quickly. With the increment in number of cars on the
road, the number of problem’s in the car due to tyre failure has increased. Often the car is
provided with tyre wheel nuts remover and jack for instance spare tyre replacement.
Nevertheless, due to the difficulty in applying the required torque to remove the nuts, most
of the time, driver rely on the tow truck and available nearest mechanic to solve. This
mechanism is designed based on torque, the design of the mechanism is based on PCD of the
car wheel which uses gears for rotary motion and universal joints to make the mechanism
adjustable and ratchet which is the main device that loosens/tightens the bolts.

Objectives:
To Design and Fabricate an adjustable multi nut tighter and remover for a car which will in
turn reduce the man effort and helps in reduction of time

Problem Definition:
Lot of effort is required to open a single nut of a car wheel and it will become a tedious task
and also consumes a lot of time. Adjustable multi nut tightener or remover will ease the
tightening and loosening of nuts and consumes very less amount of time.

Expected outcome:
The Mechanism / Machine can be successfully used as a standard tool irrespective of the
model of the vehicle. It can be used in garages, workshops and service stations.
