PHARMACY ASSISTANT

Pharmacy aides help licensed pharmacists with administrative duties in running a pharmacy.
Pharmacy assistants help pharmacists order, prepare and dispense medicines.
They work closely with pharmacy technicians, and refer any questions regarding
prescriptions, drug information, or health matters to a pharmacist.
The Pharmacy Assistant is responsible for performing over-the-counter selling of drugs and
health care products through knowledgeable, courteous, friendly, and efficient customer
service in order to meet set profit plans.

QUALIFICATIONS
Pharmacy Assistant Qualifications in some pharmacy (Mercury & Watsons):
Candidate must possess at least a Bachelor's/College Degree , Business
Studies/Administration/Management, Finance/Accountancy/Banking, Medical Science,
Nursing, Pharmacy/Pharmacology or equivalent.
Minimum Education Level:
Bachelor's Degree/Post Graduate Diploma/Professional Degree
At least one year working experience preferably in selling or cashiering.

SKILLS
Pharmacy Assistants must be able to perform routine tasks while maintaining a high degree of
concentration and attention.
Pharmacy Assistants are most effective when they have the following skills and
characteristics:

Good mathematical skills
Good problem solving and decision making skills

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILIIES

Dispenses prescription medication and other medical products to patients under direction
of licensed pharmacist
Counts pills, labels bottles, prices, and compounds medications to prepare prescriptions for
patients as directed
Performs administrative duties, including answering phones, receiving and inputting
prescription orders, operating cash registers, and restocking inventory
Gathers, organizes, and assesses patient information
Supplies patients with information and education on their prescriptions
Monitors prescription-filling process to ensure compliance with relevant regulations and
pharmacy policies
Liaises with healthcare providers and patients to obtain correct prescription information
Answers patients' questions about their medications under the supervision of the
pharmacist
Takes inventory of drugs on hand and records results
Places orders for additional drugs as directed by the pharmacist
Maintains electronic patient information
Prepares billing information for medications
Completes patients' sales transactions for purchase of prescription and over-the-counter
medications as well as other pharmaceutical products
