Introduction
A Bipolar Junction Transistor (BJT) is a device made from doped semiconductor material,
usually silicon or germanium, in which current flow by electrons and holes takes place.
There are two types of BJT, npn and pnp.
The BJT is an active device and requires dc supplies for it to operate. In order to set up
suitable dc operating or bias conditions it is essential to obtain the transistor dc
characteristics.
Transistors are normally used in conjunction with other circuit elements such as resistors
and capacitors. However, in this case the dc analysis requires the use of resistors only.

Procedure

A. Bias Stabilization
1. Construct the circuit as shown in Figure 1 and measure the current IC, IE and IB in the
collector circuit.
2. Measure base to emitter voltage VBE, emitter voltage VE, collector to emitter voltage
VCE, collector voltage VC. Tabulate the results in Table 1.
3. Inject a 5 kHz signal using function generator and set the amplitude of 200 mVpp to the
input terminal of the amplifier, 𝑣𝑖𝑛 .
4. Connect Channel 1 of the oscilloscope to point I (𝑣𝑖𝑛 ) and Channel 2 to point O (𝑣𝑜𝑢𝑡 ),
and view the 𝑣𝑖𝑛 and 𝑣𝑜𝑢𝑡 of the common emitter configuration amplifier. Capture the
image of the output in your report.
5. Calculate the gain and Vpp output for this connection.

B. Effect of Emitter Bypass Capacitor on Gain

1. With the power disconnected, remove the capacitor parallel to 𝑅𝐸2 from the circuit.
Reconnect the power and observe the effect of the 10 𝜇𝐹 parallel capacitor.
2. Repeat steps 4 and 5 from A. Bias Stabilization.
3. Determine the effect on the amplifier performance by removing the parallel capacitor.

Additional Questions

(a) Draw a complete dc and ac equivalent circuit for the circuit shown in Figure 1.

(b) Draw a DC and AC load line based on the respective equivalent circuit completed in
step (a) above.

Discussion:

(a) Discuss on the relation between 𝑣𝑖𝑛 and 𝑣𝑜𝑢𝑡 for the common emitter configuration.

(b) Analyze and comment on Gain and 𝑣𝑜𝑢𝑡 with and without the parallel capacitor at the
emitter.

(c) Discuss on the purpose of AC and DC analysis.

(d) Compare and analyze the difference between simulation and practical
measurements.

Report Writing

This section outlines what is largely expected of a technical report writing, report sections,
and their respective marks weightage.

Report Sections:

[10 marks] Introduction and Procedures:

The introduction section gives key points from the experiment, usually not more than an
A4 page long. Clear and concise statements should be used to describe the objectives
and why was the experiment conducted. It should not contain detailed descriptions of
equipment or procedures.

The procedure section should provide a clear, logical, and sequential steps of conducting
the experiment. Referring to equipment diagrams may be necessary, so provide proper
captions, annotations, and cross-referencing in the procedures.

[30 marks] Results and Analysis:

Readings and results should usually be tabulated. Tables should be captioned. If repeated
calculations are involved, provide one example of calculation for one specimen only.
Graphs are often necessary. When plotting graphs, use appropriate scale, label axes
clearly, include a title, and include a caption for cross-referencing. Plot data points with
markers of squares, cross, etc. (but not dots). Use different markers for different data set
on the same graph. Provide legends where necessary.

Captioning your table and graphs:

Table should be captioned as “Table”, and positioned at the top-centre above your table.
Graphs should be captioned as “Figure”, and positioned at the middle below your graph.

[35 marks] Discussion:

The discussion section should address the questions and topics specified in the lab sheet.
The points of discussion may include (non-exhaustive):

 Were the objectives of the experiment achieved?

 How closely were the objectives achieved?
 How can improvements be made?
 How does the theory relate to results acquired?

[10 marks] Conclusion:

The conclusion section summarizes the main conclusions for the discussion of results. It
should generally be not more than half an A4 page long.

[15 marks] Format and Presentation:

The report must be written in a formal manner and use proper grammar, sentence
structure and avoid using personal pronouns. The report must be neat, all the results must
be clear and arranged for ease of reading. Suggest to use Font 12 for Times New Roman
/ Font 11 for Arial and 1.5 line spacing.
