Introduction to Rolling

➔ What do you observe about motion of the wheel ?

➔ It is a combination of translation and Rotation, This is called Rolling.
Rolling Motion = Rotational Motion + Translational Motion

NOTE: Rolling happens only for round shaped objects. Friction is the cause for rolling of
the round rigid bodies.

If Fext is present (External Forces)

No Dynamic friction will act on body (Kinetic
f static
friction) & if friction exists, will be static
friction only.

If Fext = 0 (No External Forces)

then, f = 0 (No friction)
Instantaneous Axis of Rotation

The point about which the body is doing pure rotation.

Example A disc is in pure rolling on a road. Find the velocity of a point (say P)
making angle θ with the vertical.

A. 2 VCOMsin θ

B. VCOM sin θ

C. 2 VCOM cos θ
ω
D. 2 VCOM sin θ θ P

A
Solution:

➔ Suppose the disc has a linear velocity VCOM and

angular velocity ω
ω VCOM
➔ Consider point P at angle θ. Point P will have the
same translational velocity VCOM and Rotational P VCOM
θ
velocity Vr = Rω 1800–θ
Vr
➔ Angle between VCOM and Vr is 1800 – θ A
Vr VCOM
➔ For Pure Rolling condition, let’s discuss point A

For Point A
VCOM – Vr = 0

VCOM – Rω = 0

VCOM = Rω
For Point P

Vnet =
√ (VCOM)
2 + (Vr)2 + 2 VCOM Vr cos (180 – θ)

VCOM
Vnet =
√ (V COM) + (VCOM) – 2 VCOM VCOM cosθ

P VCOM
Vnet =
√ 2 (VCOM)2 – 2 (VCOM)2 cosθ θ

Vnet = Vr
