Chapter 1 1
THE PROBLEM AND ITS SETTING

Introduction

For the past few decades, most women were very conscious about their

looks. Women wears several forms of cosmetics product. Cosmetic products are

substance applied to our skin (face) like mascara, blush on, lipstick, different

shades of eye shadow, eyeliner, foundation and many more. It is applied to better

subjected in his environment. The aimed of this work is to made you aware of the

major stakes for the health of an uninformed customer and to offer healthier

services.²

Much have changed the world of cosmetics. Serious research had

increased exponentially on all fronts. Anti-oxidants, anti-irritants, and the aging of

the skin, to why skin wrinkles, how skin heals, what are the effects of hormones

are on skin function, and how to treat acne and blackheads not to mention a better

understanding of how sun and oxygen destroy the skin.3

importance. Especially in society you need to be fit-inn. Society indeed is very

conscious on more youthful look.²

Indeed woman has a natural beauty to be treasured. That’s why many

woman used cosmetics product. What to put?, How do I fit-inn ( society )?, What

to look?, How do I look?. Questions over questions, but application of cosmetics

product is the answer.

Because of a widespread of the said cosmetics product applied to

our skin. Awareness of an individual must address. By pointing out the possible

effects (whether positive or negative) of these cosmetic product applied to our skin.
3

The purpose of our study is to determined the level of awareness on

cosmetics in relation with the skin care of the students in San Jose National High

School. Since the main objectives of a good make-up artist is to achieved and point

out awareness to the highest level. This research is well done through survey

questionnaire to be conducted based on the overall experience of the respondents.

REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE AND STUDIES

This chapter provides the discussion of related literature and related

studies that contributed in the conceptualization and preparation of the research.

It also included the synthesis of the art, gap bridge of the study, theoretical and

conceptual paradigm.

Foreign Literature

According to Symons (1995), beauty is in the adaptations of the beholder

which means that perception of what is beautiful have been molded by millions of

years of culture. Every period of history has had its own idiosyncrasies of the ideal

physical attributes (Fox 1997). Concrete forms were seen as expressions of divine

ideas during the rise of Neo-Platonism in the sixteenth century. As a consequence,

the body was seen as an expression of the soul which leads to a higher

appreciation of beauty and a change in the ideal.1

This literature is related to our study since this literature talks about

the perceptions of what is beauty with the use of cosmetics product.

Beauty has been an active part of consumer’s lifestyle. Lifestyle is out of

word expression of a customer needs, desires, and values, reflected through

patterns of demographics, purchasing behaviors, activities, interest, and opinion.

Customer lifestyle can be practically referred to as the manner on how people live.
11

Beauty products and services are purchased for personal consumption and the

relative importance of social factor is reflected to consumer approval or decision .2

The Literature talks about beauty with beauty products in connection to our

study. Which is beauty is valued by many.

A study of Salon Brooker is the leading online scheduling, point-of-scale and

business management software for beauty industry.3

It is relevant to our study because with the use of online point-scale the

business will eventually expand their business in the beauty industry.

Another study proposed by Ronda 1999 states that two (2) out of three

(3) women are discontented and become depressed whenever they see

themselves nude in a full-length mirror. How we see ourselves or more importantly

how we think others perceived us can say a lot about our mental and physical well

being. If our perception is inaccurate it can seriously interfere with our sense of

self-worth. Also the inability to measure up, especially when we are compared to

others, can damage that core image of the self.4

The above mentioned literature is related to the present study because

study about cosmetic products will give them knowledge as well as improve their

self-esteem. Truly application of cosmetics product enhances our outward look.

In a study Bronner, Dewberry-Moore, Gross, Paige & Welch, 2004,

among a fourth-grade public school children from urban, suburban, and rural,

Maryland, it was found that children from the urban area appear to be more
12

satisfied with their body size than children from the other areas. Notably, urban

students have a larger ideal image than suburban and rural students. This may

relate to differing cultural standards for beauty in different geographic locations

(Body Image Perception Among School Children 2004).5

It is relevant to our study since it is all about the use of cosmetics

product both used in rural and public areas.

Local Literature

According to Noel Manuscom, head of planning and strategy of Splash

cosmetics, the quest for beauty may also be perceived as a quest for social

equality. “Filipinos, especially those in the C and D (classes) are still influence by

their colonial mentality that white skin and tall nose in high society have “

Manuscom says. They have the desire to a fairer skin and is can be met by buying

beauty products.1

This local literature is related to our study because it is all about the

purchasing of beauty products and the perception of an individual on the

application of it.

Another study from Alexandria, Egypt is the diversity of plants Traditional

Knowledge, and Practices in Local Cosmetics . In this study, explored the diversity

of traditional knowledge and plants that have cosmetics value in Alexandria, Egypt.

Ethnobotanical data were collected from 396 local Alexandria women. In total
13

twenty seven 27 plant species belonging to twenty seven (27) general and

seventeen (17) families were identified as local cosmetics.2

It is relevant to our study since it talks about cosmetics product and

the awareness of it.

According to Jacqe Yuengtian-Gutierez, the chief executive officer to

ALLURE Asia Inc., the brands positive following among Cebuanos has

promompted them to open a boutique for Cebuano beauty enthusiasist to try their

full line of skin caring makeup products. “I can say that we are a bit successful in

cornering a good share in the makeup market dominated by global brands because

of our competitive price points and quality”, said Guttierez.3

Cosmetics product plays an awesome role in beautifying one’s looks

and beautifying oneself.

Dr. Wattkins said: this research follow previous work in this area which

suggest that wearing make-up enhances how dominant a woman looks. “while

previous findings suggest that we are inclined to show some difference to a woman

with a good looking face, our new research suggest that make-up does not

enhance a woman dominance by benefitting how we evaluate her in a leadership

role. Woman wearing heavy maker-up are less likely to be thought of as good

leaders (new research from Abertay University has found).4

This is related to our study since it talks about the awareness on

application of cosmetics product.

14

According to the study led by Dr. Christopher Wotkins of Abertay’s

Division of Psychology published today in perception journale, revealed that the

amount of make-up a woman is wearing can have a negative impact on

perceptions of her leadership ability. It was founded that both men and women

evaluated more negatively as a leader if the image suggested she was wearing a

lot of make-up.5

This is relevant to our study because it is all about the perception

and its negative effects on the users. It says that the amount of make-up can have

an impact on leadership stability of a person wearing it.

Foreign Studies

European consumer exposure to cosmetic products, a framework for

conducting population exposure assessments, states that access to reliable

exposure to data is essential to evaluate the toxicological safety of ingredients in

cosmetics product. This study was carried out by European cosmetic

manufacturer’s acting within the trade association Colipa, with the aim to construct

a probabilistic European population model of exposure.1

This is relevant to the present study because exposure to cosmetic products

should be evaluated for the toxicologically safety of the users.

Malaysian consumer’s awareness, perception and attitude towards

cosmetics product states that increase usage of cosmetic products has caused

growing concern about the safety of these products, and yet little is known about
15

cosmetics from the consumer’s perspective. In line with this problem, people

currently have a greater awareness to protect themselves from hazardous

chemical substances. They have become more concerned about cosmetics

formulations, and this has developed into a vital criterion for consumers in

choosing cosmetics product.2

The study has an importance to the present study because it talks about the

awareness and seeing it as a concern and safety from hazardous substance.

According to Frank Toscan and Frank Angelo it has convince them in

creating their own makeup line suitable for their necessities through cooking. The

brand became famous due to the colors, information in magazine and word of

mouth. MAC Cosmetic offer a range of product wise materials which was an

innovation in the field of makeup artistry. They become popular to the mass market

because they offered a different approach wherein the company focused more on

honesty and fairness when it comes to the making of the product line. 3

The study is related to our study since it both focused on the used of

cosmetic products and its impact.

Another study is the regulatory aspects regarding the claims made on the

packaging, evaluation of quality of cosmetics product, evaluation of toxicity of

cosmetics product (toxicity studied in animals, in vitro-alternative methods), safety

evaluation of cosmetics products (dermal absorption studies), efficacy evaluation

of cosmetics product (clinical testing, biometric evaluations-hydration, firming

16

effect, anti-wrinkle effect, slimming effect, dun protection), sensory evaluation

methods and sers perception and psychological impact.4

This study is related to our study because safety evaluation of cosmetic

products should be the number one concern for the safety of the high demanding

users.

In India, one of the fast growing business is cosmetic. Cosmetic is

perceived as a daily used type of product rather than a luxury item. Cosmetics or

in Layman term Makeup are products used to enhance the facial features of the

person. The commonly known product are lipstick, eye shadow, mascara,

foundation etc.5

This study is relevant to the present study because it talks about cosmetics

products and its significant role played to the fast growing business.

Local Studies

Local Beauty and Cosmetics Product in Ph. They say beauty is only skin

deep, but it does help if you have a make-up. You may be tempted to buy foreign

brands because that’s what you are used to, but the Philippines has it’s fair share

of beauty and cosmetics that are up there in terms of quality. We have listed so

expats, foreigners, and even the locals will know what products are proudly Pinoy-

made. It includes: Ever Bilena Cosmetics, Pili Beauty, Pink Sugar Cosmetics, Hello

Gorgeous by Skinline, Skin Potions, Leyende, and Nany Rose.1

17

This study is relevant to the present because awareness on cosmetics

product in relation with the skin care was comprises of product quality.

According to Sarah A. Vickery, co-researcher for the study make up really

can be seen as a tool in woman’s arsenal. Finding revealed that cosmetics have a

significant and automatic effect on judgement of attractiveness.2

This is relevant to our study literally because the used of cosmetic products

plays a significant role in beautification process.

Woman who wear makeup are perceived as more attractive than those

who do not, according to a recently released study headed by Harvard Medical

School, Assistant Professor Nancy E. Etcoff. “I am interested in bringing science

to the study of adornment”, said Escoff.3

It is relevant to the present study because they are both focused on the

used of cosmetic products. In addition application of cosmetic products perceived

as more attractable than those who don’t.

Kantars study, which tracked shopping behavior of 3,000 Filipinos

homes in urban and rural areas across the Philippine from June 2014-June 2015,

found out that purchased of personal care items increased increase by 11 percent

over the period.4

Since ancient times woman have turned to the beautifies of nature to help

or increase their own beauty. Even today, people especially in rural areas depend

upon plants for traditional cosmetics.

18

Synthesis of the Art

There are many kinds of studies. It includes the foreign and local literature,

foreign studies and local studies. In which the researcher determine and analyze

the different knowledge, skills as well as the experience in pointing out awareness

of cosmetics product in terms of skin care of the client.

The review of related literature and studies discussed about the level of

awareness of the students in terms of skin care with the used of cosmetic products.

Wherein they can be able to feel comfortable that the outcome can gave good

effects to them. Authors also have presented their own views based on further

research and individual experiences.

Gap Bridge of the Study

Based from the related literature and studies from both foreign and local,

the researchers get some information that are related to their studies. The purpose

of this study was to determined the level of awareness in terms of skin care of the

students in San Jose National High School with the used of cosmetic products.

The studies conducted were more on profitability. Purposely, the study will pioneer

the research on awareness of the respondents.

The abovementioned studies were complete on their own rights in terms of

objectives or goal dreaming to achieve. This study aim to acquire more knowledge

in bringing out awareness on used of cosmetics product applied to our skin to the
19

highest level. And also to address each of us to be aware, this is the gap of the

study dream to bridge.

Theoretical Framework

The theoretical framework of this study is related on the Chicago School of

Media Theory which shows that using a powder puff, Countess Maria Coventry

caked her face until it was the shade of snow. She painted her cheeks to feign a

flush and stained her lip scarlet red. This was her routine, day in and day out. She

did it for power and idealized image. And it had the effect she intended-the British

Royal Court was riveted when she entered a room. It also had an effect didn’t

intend. On September 30,1760, she died at the age of twenty seven (27). The

cause of death: cosmetics

Another study was anchored on the customer satisfaction and perception of

quality by Kotler and Keller. It states that customer satisfaction was determined by

the degree to which someone is happy or disappointed with the observed

performance in relation to his/her expectation.

The theoretical paradigm of this study is presented to figure 1.

Research Instrument

The researcher’s utilize a survey questionnaire in gathering the data. The

questionnaire is composed of four (4) sets of questions: part I pertains to the

profile of the students in terms of age, sex, and civil status; part II concern to the

level of awareness of the students with regards to the application of cosmetic

products in relation with the skin care in terms of skin, product quality, and health;

part III pertains to the prevailing problems encountered by the respondents in

terms of skin, product quality, and health; and part IV is the possible solution to

address the problem that the respondent encountered in terms of skin, product

quality, and health. Wherein they would rate each item or a scale from 1-5, with 1

as “strongly disagree” and 5 as “strongly agree”.

Data Gathering Procedure

After the finalization and approval of the research instrument of the

prepared statement of the problem, the drafting of the survey tool was prepared.

After its finalization, clearances were secure from the researcher instructor. There

was a continuous data gathering process from the start of the implementation until

a needed data were secured from the respondents. Approval to distribute the

survey questionnaire and conduct the study was secured from the school

administrator. The researchers then distributed the survey forms and conduct the
27

study personally. After the respondents are successfully accomplish the survey

questionnaire, the answers were tabulated and interpreted using several statistics.

Validity and Reliability

The validity of the instrument will established by consulting the Practical

research 2 adviser.

The reliability of the study will be established by conducting a dry run (survey

questionnaire) which was conducted in San Jose National High School students

and is distributed to Grade 10-Matatag and or to the same participant after the first

survey to see how it works and whether changes are necessary before the start of

actual field.

B. Sex

Female respondents got the highest frequency of 20, with the percentage of

66.67%. And the lowest is the male with the frequency count of 10, and with the

percentage of 33.33%. This, can we say to the fact that mostly of the woman used

cosmetic products.
32

Based on the research, females are the one who are most likely to used

cosmetic products. Females today also follow new trends and fashion relating to

the used of cosmetic products. However, only few of male had an interest to the

used of cosmetic products.
