EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

Sleep plays a vital part on one’s overall wellbeing. Our physical and mental health greatly

depends on getting the required amount of sleep. An average adult should get 7-8 hours of

sleep per day, as recommended by the American Academy of Sleep Medicine (AASM). However,

several factors contribute to a person not getting enough sleep. This leads to sleep loss and

eventually, sleep debt. For example, if a person loses 2 hours of sleep in a day, he has to sleep

an extra two hours to recover his sleep loss, which does not happen in most cases. A study

conducted by Sun Life Financial in the Philippines shows that 46% of Filipinos do not get to sleep

the required 8 hours per day. According to Medical News US, 68% of students fall asleep the

moment their head hits their pillow. Only 80% of students get to sleep 8 hours per day. The

more we study about sleep loss, the more that we will know about its effect on our wellbeing.

Sleep loss curtails critical thinking, messes up memory and mood, retards reasoning, and

shatters quantitative skills, all of which are important for academic learning.

What can be an alternative to sleep loss? Napping. A 45-minute sleep loss can increase patience

and alertness, lower blood pressure, and dramatically improve one’s ability to remember

information and creativity.

Since 2014, universities in the United States have started to build sleeping lounges inside the

school to accommodate students who needs to take a break or nap in between classes.

Universities in the Philippines have since followed in their steps. Sleeping lounges not only

provides a place for relaxation but it also gives students the chance to rest their tired minds and

bodies without the hassle of going back home to get 2-3 hours of sleep.

The proponents started this project in June 2019 with the goal to be a provider of a safe and

conducive environment dedicated to the wellbeing of the students. Nap to the Top aims to give
students a home away from home where they can refresh their mind and still be able to go back

to class on time since there is not a risk of oversleeping.

The establishment will be conveniently located in Antipolo Valley Mall (AVM) just a few steps

away from the university itself. Unlike the experience of trying to sleep in the library of the

university-provided student area, Nap to the Top offers bed rentals that can accommodate one

student per unit. There will be a total of 20 bunk beds in the sleeping area and 6 bean bags in

the common lounge to accommodate the customers. The lounge will also offer a locker for the

safekeeping of the customers’ belongings. It also has a shower room so that they can refresh

themselves before going back to class. The lounge also has a pantry area that will offer

refreshments and finger foods as a “pick-me-upper” for the customers. One of the most unique

propositions of Nap to the Top is their Napping Assistants, wherein the customer can tell what

time they would like to be woken up during their registration, and the Nap Assistant will be

designated to wake them up on time so they can avoid oversleeping and missing classes.

Nap to the Top aims to help students get enough sleep so they can be more productive during

their classes. We believe that a well-rested student is a student that can perform competitively

and achieve their goals… one nap at a time.
