plants. Are you excited? Ok! Be ready
because we will encounter some activity
as we go on in our adventure.

This learning materials will help you explore and

learn more about flowering and non-flowering
plants. There are activities prepared for you, so enjoy
and learn and be prepared to be a botanist.

Flowers are beautiful creation by the nature and
we all love flowers to some extent. But did you
know that we have two kinds of plants. I’ll tell you

Guide
what are they.

Flowering plants are also known as angiosperms.

These plants have flowers and their reproduction
is done by flowers. All flowering plants produce
seeds and it is covered by a fruit. There are the
most developed plants in the world.

Example: mango, santol, avocado,

Non-flowering plants do not produce seeds and

flowers and may not even have roots, stem, and
leaves. Some of these plants are small or
microscopic that can’t be seen with the naked eyes.

Example: molds, alage, fungi, mossess, liverworts,

and ferns.

Anothwer non-flowering plants called

gymnosperms have no true flower and have
woody stem. There seeds are not enclosed in a
fruit.

Example: pine, cypress, hemlock fir, spruce

Did you know already the two kinds of plants?

Now are you ready to have some refreshment
before we proceed to the next topic? I know you
can do it because Mr. Woody will assist you.
Good luck!

Now let’s proceed to the next topic. Are
you excited? Ok! Have you observe the
plants behind me? These are moss and
ferns. And now we are going to classify
some plants according to their group.

3
Fruits and vegetables that came
from the flower are angiosperm.
But angiosperms is divided into
two. The monocot and dicot.

Looking at their differences what plant comes out in your mind. If

you can’t think anything, try again to see some example in the
chart.

Ferns are spore bearing, they have roots, stem and leaves.
They belong to Pteridophyta.
Ferns
Mossess and liverworts on
rocks, stone and decaying log
also spore bearing. They don’t
Mossess liverworts have roots and stem but they
have simple leaves. They
belong to Bryophyta.

Cycads, pines, conifers, and

cypress are gymnosperms.
Cycads Pine Conifer Cypress They have seeds which are
not enclosed in a fruit. Most
of these plants have leaves
called needles. They grow
on cold windy
mountainsides or in cold,
Fungi Mushroom Alage molds dry areas.
Fungi, algae and molds belong to thallophyta. They have no roots, stem , and
leaves. They have no chlorophyll and do not make their own food.

Ferns and mosses reproduce by releasing millions

of spores through the air. The spores are fed eggs
and are spread through the environment by wind
hy water is necessary in reproduction of ferns?
_____________________________________
Bryophytes are plants that lack of vascular tissue and require
environmental water to reproduce. Characteristics of this
group include: a waxy cuticle to slow down water loss and
gametania that protect developing gametes. 6
Activity 3
Direction: Illustrate the missing picture of the modes of
reproduction of ferns and explain briefly how do ferns
reproduce?

How do ferns reproduce?

Hi! My name is Daisy. Mr. Green asked me to help you

in this activity. All you have to do is to follow
instruction and direction. I know you are ready. XoXo

Did you enjoy the activities? Are
your answers all correct? If it is a

When you are eating a piece of fruit, you are

eating a matured ovary because fruit comes
from a flowering plant which contains an
ovary which will become fruit.

When you are drinking coffee, you are

drinking fruit juice because coffee bean is a
fruit.

Tomatoes are a fruit not a vegetable. Tomatoes

are the most popular fruits in the world.

Eating more fruits and vegetables could significantly

reduce the risk of many chronic diseases, high B.P,
obesity, heart disease and some cancers.
