Science, technology and society are essential to one another, they complement each other

through as one would not be as prominent as it would be with out the help of the other. And to
celebrate the Science, Technology and Society month an exhibit was held in the University of the
Philippines – Diliman at Palma Hall to showcase the advancement of science in which Filipinos
have contributed.
During my visit at UP I saw lot of inventions which Filipinos made. I was surprised since
I did not know that there were a lot of technologies that our countrymen has made. Inside Palma
Hall there were a lot of models of these invention and the first one I saw was the Diwata
satellites which were microsatellites that were built by engineers and scientists from UPD. They
said that it was used to detect weather, disasters and monitor forest in the Philippines. It is a
useful invention since the Philippines experience a lot of typhoons and can help send information
to alert people of the upcoming thyphoons. The next invention that caught my attention was the
Fish I Project which according to them is a semi-automated fish population density, species
identification and biomass estimation system for conducting UVC by divers without marine
science domain expertise. It can analyze fishes through a stereo camera and software which they
have developed. Another is the Automated Rapid Reef Assessment System (ARRAS) which is a
camera used to monitor the coral reefs. It is useful to our environment and economy since it
provides a low cost for monitoring the reefs and as well as it is effective. Lastly is the VESSER
which stands for Versatile Information System for Science Education and Research which is a
set of laboratory equipment that has a low production cost but is made out of high grade
materials. It caught my attention as coming from a school without laboratory equipment, I had a
hard time coping up with using it for experiments unlike my other classmates. This can help
improve the knowledge of students in their science classes.
I am amazed how Filipinos are able to develop these inventions not for profit but for
helping our environment and those who are in need. Science, technology and society are really
connected to one another as these can help us build a better world. Through knowledge and
passion we can solve problems and create solution to the hindrances we are facing. I hope that
many more people will be inspired by these invention and eventually create their own to help and
save our earth and also the people living in it.
