Good afternoon class!

Before we start our lesson, let’s have first an energizer activity so

as to energize and stretch our bones. May I request everyone to please rise and let’s follow the
steps on the video.
Thank you class, I hope your body and minds are ready now to learn new lessons.
Class I have here pictures of some substances/mixtures found at home. I know you are
familiar with these and you know where and how you’re going to use them. I have pictures of
vinegar, softdrinks..what else?_______, ______, and _____.
This time, I want you to classify these substances whether they are acids or bases. This
column is for the acids and this column for the bases. Let’s start with detergent powder, is this
an acid or base? Very good! Would you like to paste or put this on the basic group? Okay
please stand.
Anybody who wants to pick a picture and classify it as acid or base by placing it on its
proper group. (students classify the substances) Let me see if you did it correctly.
After we classified substances that are acids and basics, let’s now arrange the pictures
according to their pH value on the pH scale. This pH scale has 14 numbers and is used to
illustrate how strong or week the acidity or basicity of a substance. Below no. 7 are acids and
above 7 are basics. The lower the number, the higher the acidity and the higher the number the
higher the basicity. Let’s start with the gastric juice that has 1.6-1.8 pH value. Anybody who
wants to place this on the pH scale? As you notice, the pH scale is numbered 0-14 and it has an
interval number of one. Next to 1 is 2 and 3, 4 and so forth…..If the pH scales are 1.6-1.8, make
estimation on how you will place the substances properly. So, between 1 and 2, I think 1.6-1.8
are located here. You may use this ruler to form a line to connect the substance to its pH value.
Among the pictures, which is the most acidic? Why? Because it has the least/lowest
number of pH value. How about the most basic? Yes it is the _____ because it has the highest
number of pH value.
Now that you know the pH values of some common substances, let’s now see the
characteristics and differences of acids from base through the video that I’m going to play.
Please watch and listen carefully as the 2 kids explain the differences of acids and bases.
According to the video you have watched, what is again the taste of acid? What fruit is
acidic? Can you give other fruits that taste sour? Okay! So those fruits are sours so therefore
they contain acids.
How about base class? What’s the taste of basic? It tastes bitter. Can you give me
examples of bitter substances or mixtures? Correct! All of them taste bitter therefore they are
considered basics. Another characteristic of base is slippery. Can you give me examples of
substances that are slippery? Yes correct! When we accidentally left the soap on the floor of the
bathroom, there is the tendency that we might get slide if we step on it because we all know that
soaps are slippery. And that is one of the characteristics of basic.
Based on the video, how can we know if the substance is an acid or a base? No. 1 is by
simply tasting the substance and no. 2 way is by using a litmus paper. If the litmus paper turns
red, it is an______...and if its turns blue it is a _____.
Another way of knowing the acidity or basicity of the substance is by the pH scale. The
pH scale measures how acidic or basic a substance is. The pH scale ranges from 0 to 14. A pH
of 7 is neutral. A pH less than 7 is acidic. A pH greater than 7 is basic.
