The video talks about Science and what and how C.S. Lewis view Science.

According to the video CS Lewis didn’t attacked science itself bur rather scientism. In our
modern world technology and modern science plays a vital role and greatly influences the
people of today. Due to its importance according to CS Lewis, it may lead Science to
control human life if people abuse the use of it. Furthermore, as what one of the speaker
said “Science could be corrupted, people pursue science in order to gain power and
control over people”. Because of the knowledge some people have of science there is a
possibility that these people (or the scientists) can have the power to dictate others based
on what they know and that others don’t.

According to CS Lewis Science and magic are twins and classified their similarities
into 3. First is Science as a Religion. Second, Science as Credulity and lastly, Science as
Power. These 3 were discussed in the video and how it proved that science and magic
are similar.

Science as religion tells us that the magical view of the world gives a sense that
there is more than just our daily lives or there is more to life than just going through our
daily routines. It gives us a sense of meaning or a purpose. For non-religious people they
focus on naturalism or the idea that anything or whatever exists can be explained by
natural causes. For others, they see science as a religion. Science is what gives their
lives a purpose or meaning.

Science as Credulity, credulity means the tendency of a person to believe that

something is real or true. Since it promotes credulous thinking it leads to the lack of
skepticism. In our modern world today people tend to believe that anything is true just
because it was proven or said by science. Lewis discussed 2 examples relating to science
as Credulity. One is Freudianism and the other is Darwinism. For Freudianism it tells us
that all human doings are seen as a consequence of our subconscious desire. For
evolutionism it tells us the idea of matter could magically transform itself into complex and
conscious living things through blind and unguided process. According to Lewis if both
lack reason, then how shall we trust our human mind? Is our mind trustworthy? Do we
know the truth?
 Science as Power or the quest of power. Magicians or fortunetellers seeks for
power over the universe to control it. Even others pursue science in order to obtain such
power. It seems like it is part of our human nature that we desire power and to be in
control. In relation to science, it is seen that science is the savior to remake the world. It
seems that modern science already has the power to influence people even in the way
we think and live our lives. Yes, science has given us so many good things such as
technology and even in our medicines but as what Lewis said the tendency of science to
control us maybe dangerous. People could use it in order to control the universe if there
are no limitations.

The biggest danger of science is to be in control of the world due to its potentials.
The misuse and abuse of science may cause due to the knowledge of the people about
the world and how it really works that may lead people to control and dictate because
they know or they have knowledge about it that others do not. As what the video said,
“those who do not know about science is stupid”. We must seek a science that respects
human rights and dignity than a science that results to wrong doings and evil that may
hurt or put others in danger. We should not become slaves of science but rather we use
science as an instrument to create good and share knowledge about the things we know
of. We make use of it advantages and the good things it offers that would greatly aid the
society. Therefore, we must pursue a kind of knowledge for the people and not against
the people.

Based on my understanding of the video, I agree with CS Lewis that abusing of

the use of science may lead to so many dangers. Furthermore, it is true that science
doesn’t have the right to dictate the people. Therefore, in order to prevent the strong
dangers of science, we should use our knowledge of science to help our understanding
about the world we live in but with limitations. As what Lewis said, “We set limits on what
we should and shouldn’t do” that might lead to evil doings. Use science in such a way
that will widen our understanding and knowledge rather than using it to take advantage
of what we know in order to have the control over the world and as well as the people.
