SALESMAN - BIFF MONOLOGUE (Please prepare in both English and Chinese)

BIFF: No! Nobody’s hanging himself, Willy! I ran down eleven flights with a pen in my
hand today. And suddenly I stopped, you hear me? And in the middle of that office
building, do you hear this? I stopped in the middle of that building and I saw — the
sky. I saw the things that I love in this world. The work and the food and time to sit
and smoke. And I looked at the pen and said to myself, what the hell am I grabbing
this for? Why am I trying to become what I don’t want to be? What am I do- ing in an
office, making a contemptuous, begging fool of myself, when all I want is out there,
waiting for me the minute I say I know who I am! Why can’t I say that, Willy? (He tries
to make Willy face him, but Willy pulls away and moves to the left.)

WILLY (with hatred, threateningly): The door of your life is wide open!

BIFF: Pop! I’m a dime a dozen, and so are you!

WILLY (turning on him now in an uncontrolled outburst): I am

not a dime a dozen! I am Willy Loman, and you are Biff Loman!
(Biff starts for Willy, but is blocked by Happy. In his fury, Biff seems on the verge of
attacking his father.)

BIFF: I am not a leader of men, Willy, and neither are you. You were never anything
but a hard-working drummer who landed in the ash can like all the rest of them! I’m
one dollar an hour, Willy I tried seven states and couldn’t raise it. A buck an hour! Do
you gather my meaning? I’m not bringing home any prizes any more, and you’re
going to stop waiting for me to bring them home!

比 夫：不！谁也不用去上吊，威利，今天我手里拿着钢笔跑下十一层大楼。忽然之
间我停住了，你听见了吗？就在那所办公大楼的中间，你听见了吗？我站在大楼中间
往外一看——我看见了天。我看见了我在世界上真正喜欢的东西。干活，吃饭，有时
间休息，抽一根烟。我又看了看钢笔，我问我自己，我拿这个玩意儿干什么？我干吗
一定要干我不愿意干的差事？我跑到人家办公室干什么，低声下气求人家赏饭吃？其
实我想干的活儿就在外面，只要我敢说，我看清了我自己是什么人！为什么这句话就
那么难于出口呢，威利？（他迫使威利正面对着他，但威利挣脱了，走向左面）
威 利： （恶狠狠地威胁）你本来前途无限，到处的门都为你敞开着！
比 夫： 爸，我这样的人不值钱，一毛钱一堆，你也一样！
威 利： （转向他，爆发）我不是一毛钱一堆！我是威利·洛曼，你是比夫·洛！（比
夫朝威利冲过去，被哈皮拦住，在狂怒之下，比夫好像是要去打父亲）

比 夫： 我不是当领袖的材料，威利，你也不是。你一向不过是个东跑西颠的推销
员，最后叫人扔在垃圾堆里，跟别的推销员一样！我干一个钟头就值一块钱，威利！
我跑了七个州也没多挣一点。一个钟头一块！你明白我的意思吗？我往后不会拿着优
胜奖杯回家来，你也别在家里等了，死了心吧！
