SURPAS User Guide

The Surgical Risk Preoperative Assessment System (SURPAS) was developed to provide additional data
to providers to assist in predicting an individual patient’s risk of perioperative complications.

To use it, open the application within a patient encounter.

Then fill in the 5 blank data entry fields. Patient age will be prepopulated, surgeon specialty will be
prepopulated after you designate it once:

1) Select a procedure: Enter the procedure description or CPT code, and select the appropriate
procedure from the drop down options.
2) Functional health status: Enter the patient’s Functional Health Status. Description of each of the
3 statuses is provided when the mouse hovers over the functional health status names.
3) ASA physical status: Enter the patient’s ASA Class (American Society of Anesthesiology Physical
Status Classification). Description of how to calculate each different ASA Class is provided when
the mouse hovers over the ASA Classes.
4) Planned hospitalization status following procedure: Select the radio button appropriate for
whether the patient is undergoing inpatient or outpatient surgery.
5) Surgical specialty: Select the operating surgeon’s specialty from the drop down list. Once this
has been set, it will prepopulate as the same. You may change this if you need to.
6) Emergency procedure: Select the radio button appropriate for whether the patient is
undergoing an emergency surgery or not.

Results: As soon as of the empty data fields are completed, the patient’s risk estimates will be calculated
and provided, and compared to the national average for patients undergoing the same operation.

Documentation: Text describing the patient’s risk factors and predicted risks, as well as national average
risks, can be imported into Epic notes by clicking the “Copy” button at the bottom of the
“Documentation” tab. This text can be pasted into an Epic document such as a clinic note using Ctrl-V.

Patient handout: A patient-centric handout can be viewed under the “Patient handout” tab. This can be
printed by right-clicking the mouse and selecting “print.”

Questions and Comments: These can be transmitted to the SURPAS Support Team via clicking on the
dialog radio button in the right upper corner of the SURPAS box.
