Lesson Topic:

Addition and Subtraction of Whole Numbers

Date: Time: Subject:
10/16/19 11:00am-11:45am Math Topic 4 Review
Content Standard/s:
 4.NBT.B.4
o Fluently add and subtract multi-digit whole numbers using the standard algorithm.

Materials:
 Topic 4 Tree Map
 Vocabulary sheet from Lesson 1
 Multi-colored markers
 Practice problem posters (including completed model)
 Math textbook

Lesson Objective/s:
 Students will be able to add and subtract whole numbers using various solving strategies
such as compensation, breaking apart, counting on, regrouping, estimation, drawing a
picture, and writing an equation.

Introduction to Lesson (Rationale, Student Engagement, Create Bridges From Past Learning, Behavior
Expectations):
 Review Tree Map poster of Topic 4 including the essential understanding, the guiding
questions of all 6 lessons, and examples and vocabulary for each.
 Show model poster of how they should look when completed – four different colors, the
strategies are named, etc.
 How should we act when we are working on these posters?
o One student should not do all the work
o You are not going to write on any other team’s square or change their answers
o Work together to find another way to solve the problem
o Write your name on the back of the square you completed

Teaching Strategies:
 Heterogeneous grouping (groups of 3 made by teacher including students with different
learning needs and ability levels)
 Modeling
 Use of visuals
 Peer-to-peer collaboration

Learning Activities (Guided Practice/ Collaborative Practice, Independent Practice):

 Once students are in their groups, I will give them their first poster with one problem on
it to complete. They will be given about 5 minutes to work together to solve the problem
and get their final answer on the poster. After five minutes, the groups will rotate and
complete the second box, also working for five minutes. They will rotate two more times,
so that each poster (8 total) will be solved in four different ways.
Assessment/s (How you will assess or evaluate student learning):
 Each poster will be used as an assessment of student learning because students will label
which boxes they have completed in their groups. I will assess both the students ability to
get the correct answer as well as their ability to solve the problems in multiple ways,
showing all the steps to complete them.
 Students will also complete the review sets of problems in their math books for
homework as a way to prepare for their test and as an assessment of their abilities when
working independently.
 Students also have the opportunity to complete an optional, online, practice test and
receive extra credit points for correct answers. This practice test is very similar to the
actual test they will take the next day, so this will be good practice for the students as well
as a useful assessment to see which students are practicing the skills in a way that helps
them on the actual test.

Closure (Describe how students will reflect on what they have learned.):
 Once the students have rotated four times and each problem has been solved or checked
in four ways, we will review the numbers and check to make sure all the answers are
correct. If there are discrepancies on the posters and groups are getting different answers
to the same problem, we will solve those problems together as a class and correct the
posters to make sure they are all correct.
 Students will practice independently and have the opportunity to ask questions on
problems they are unsure about how to solve.
