Forest loss blamed for Mindanao floods.

Philippine daily inquirer

Many people are trapped in their schools due to the flood, they didn’t expect that the water would rose so suddenly.
Rescuers couldn’t get to them because of those stranded vehicles that blocked the road. They have no choice but to spend
their nights at the campus. The photo shows how these men struggle to clear the parking lot full of muds left by the knee
deep flood in Cagayan De oro. The Agriculture secretary Emmanuel Pinol said that the continued tree cutting in the
Northern Mindanao has led to the massive flooding that submerged Cagayan de oro city and nearby areas in Visayas. He
said that he is alarmed at the recurrent flooding in the area, he also stated that there’s only one reason for the flash flood.
“There are no trees in the mountains to hold the rainwater,” Arthur Cupay of the DPWH also said that the flood was also
worsened by the clogged ditches. They are looking at deforestation and the unabated cutting of trees in the mountains of
Lanao del Norte, Misamis Oriental and Occidental as the possible cause of these flash floods. About 3,000 families in the
region evacuated as floodwater rose. Pinol formed a technical group to know the damages cause by the flash flood. They
assess the damage to agriculture in the region and some part of visayas. He assured the public that agricultural losses are
just minimal and would not affect food supply and prices of agricultural products in the region. He also said that 149.5 of
hectares of corn were damaged in Bukidnon while on Misamis Occidental, at least 870 hectares of land planted with corn,
rice, and vegetables were submerged by floods. In other parts of Visayas there are also some reports of at least 11 people
dead because of the flash flood.

Hazard :
Natural and Man made hazard.

Vulnerability :

Causes :
Deforestation and the continued cutting of trees is one of the reasons of the flash flood. Trees hold the rainwaters and
without it, all the rainwaters will go through a certain area and that would causes the water to rise. Clogged ditches is also
one of the reasons that worsened the flood.

Effects :
Many agricultural products are damaged. 870 hectares of land planted with corn, rice, and vegetables were submerged by
the flood in Misamis Occidental while 149.5 of heactares of corn were damaged in Bukidnon. At least 11 people are also dead
beause of this flood.
