3. Terminology and Assumptions

A. The terminology used in this Instruction Manual is as the IICL industry standard.
The container doors are at the Rear of the container, the closed end-wall is at the
Front of the container. LH means the Left Hand side facing the front of the container
and RH means the Right Hand side.

B. The Trans-Rak, the Container, the Car and the Car Tyres must be clean,
undamaged and in full working order with no missing or damaged parts.

C. The starting position for these instructions is with the Trans-Rak frame stowed up in
the roof space of the container.

D. These instructions are for use by trained personnel only. They apply to the Trans-
Rak itself. Other guidance may be needed by the user outside the expertise of
Trans-Rak International Ltd. such as container operation, Car stowage, Car lashing
and Health and Safety, Transport and Handling.

E. Handling and Transport. Note that on Railways, free shunting accelerations must
not exceed 2g. In these situations, use additional lashings on both Trans-Raks.

F. These instructions will be updated from time to time without notice.

Check with TRI Ltd for updates.

5. Preparing the Container and Trans-Rak

A. Place the container on firm level

ground so that the door end is no
+50 mm/
higher than 50mm (2in) or lower than - 300 mm

300mm (12in) than the front. Open Ideally the container should be level. If not,
slope container down toward door end
the container doors and tie them 300mm maximum or up 50mm (2in) maximum
back.

B. Check that the container and Trans-

Raks are undamaged, clean, swept
and free from contaminants and that
all the container lashings are in
working order.

C. Check that all of the Trans-Rak

Posts and hanging brackets are
undamaged and properly fixed to the
top and bottom side rails.

6. Lowering the Trans-Rak from Roof

A. Stand up on the LH side, on a stool or step ladder

B. Lift open the Screw Lock 1 IMPORTANT – These locks must always be Locked
vertically for transport when loaded or empty.

LH side, Clockwise
= DOWN

C. Engage the Drill on the LH drive nut 2 for clockwise movement and lower the Trans-
Rak 100mm (4in) from the roof. Check that all four corners are lowering freely from the
roof and not trapped.
OPERATING INSTRUCTIONS

D. Then continue lowering the LH until the Trans-Rak is about 900mm (36in) from the
floor 3 .

E. Move to the RH side. Switch the Drill for

Counter-clockwise rotation. Engage the RH side,
Drill 4 and lower the front end of the Counter-Clockwise = DOWN
Trans-Rak down to the floor. STOP –
DO NOT GO MORE THAN FIRM
FLOOR CONTACT.

F. Repeat on the LH side to lower the rear 4

end 5 and STOP – DO NOT GO
MORE THAN FIRM FLOOR CONTACT.

G. Move the Trans-Rak frame 6 so that it is positioned equally between the two pairs
of Posts 7 and 7 resting on the floor with the lift wires at zero tension and loose.

H. Place a ramp 8 at the door end so

that the Cars can be easily and safely
driven in and out of the container.

8

7. Preparing the Trans-Rak for loading

A. The Trans-Rak must be flat on the

floor, centrally and equally 1
positioned between the four side
Posts 7 and 7 (see previous
drawing) with the lift wires at zero
tension and loose. 2

B. Unhook all four Winches and

Webbings from the stowed
positions - two at the container H
Closed End 1 and two at the
container Door End 2 and place
to the side 4 away from the
wheel path of loading cars.

C. Now secure the Door End of the

Trans-Rak frame to a post with one
Winch 3 . This stops the Trans-
Rak moving along the floor when a
Car is being loaded and prevents
potential damage to personnel and 4
the car. Note: The correct hook 3
position is when the hook is
engaged with the Hook Plate H .

D. Remember - place the other 4

winches and webbings away from
the path 4 of the oncoming car.

8. Setting Wheel Supports

A. Place two 40mm thick measuring

blocks on either side of the car tyre
and measure the distance between
the blocks A . Dimension A is the
distance that both Front and Rear
Wheel Supports should be set to and
locked. This will allow the wheels to
project 50mm (2inch) below the
Trans-Rak wheel support. A

The wooden blocks should be

retained for the loading and un-
loading of cars. Placing them under
the drive wheels assists the process.

B. At the container Closed end, Unlock the two Locking Rods 1 and slide the Wheel
Support 2 to dimension A and re-lock the Locking Rods again. Important –
Do not load any vehicle without these Locking Rods being in their locked positions.

– Fit 2 x Front Restraint Webbings and adjust to pull car

back towards front wall. CHECK that 70mm minimum
exists between car + roof and 100mm car + front wall.
– Fit 2 x Rear Restraint Webbings and secure.

– Drive Car 2 forwards to transport position under Car 1

and CHECK good clearances exist all round. Fit 4 x Floor
Lashings securely. Repeat sequence for Car 3 and Car 4.

9. Car Loading and Lashing

Important: For proper lashing configurations, check with the Car and Lashing
manufacturers. Lashings can be applied to the Car body, wheels or tyres. The user
must seek expert advice to ensure that the Cars are lashed properly and securely. As
an example, a typical method lashing over the 4 wheels is described here.

A. Secure the Trans-Rak frame to the floor with the Webbing and Winch as described
in previous section 7C 7C . Place 2 x Wooden blocks 2 in the front wheel area
to assist loading. Drive the Car (Car 1) backwards onto the Trans-Rak.
WARNING - DO NOT rev the engine to a high speed or drive too fast.

B. Engage the Car brakes and engage 1st gear or ‘Park’ provided that the Car
manufacturer agrees with this practice.

C. Slowly release the Webbing 3 taking

care to not to let the Car swing forward 3
to impact the wall or another Car.

D. Raise the Trans-Rack to transport

height. Using the Drill, carefully raise
both the front and rear of the Trans-Rak
to be level at 500mm / 750mm 4
(20” / 29”) above the floor.

LIFT Car level

500mm / 750mm

50mm (2in) Max

E. Important: Check that tyres do not project more than 50mm (2in) below the support
edge of the wheel supports. If they do, then re-check the tyre and wheel support
dimension A and adjust as necessary.
OPERATING INSTRUCTIONS

F. Now feed the webbing of the Wheel Lashings (not supplied) under the Trans-Rak
and up around the wheels and the wheel supports and secure them firmly with
small ratchets.

G. FIT Wheel Lashings x 4

Remember –
Diverters may
be needed to
divert lashings
away from car
wheel arches

H. Lash all four wheels securely (- with Diverters if necessary).

I. Important: Diverters - The Wheel Lashings must not touch the bodywork of the
car. Damage will occur to both the car and the webbing if they are in contact. Use
the Diverter to pull the webbing down and away from wheel arches as shown. If
contact cannot be prevented, then in addition, use a Protective Webbing Sleeve in
the contact area - see below and Section 2E - Lashings for details.

Webbing Sleeve

to car and lashings

J. Important: Lashings - All lashings

must have a minimum of 200mm of
webbing wound around the spindle on
the Ratchet. This equates to 2 360
degree turns of the spindle – see
following page.
OPERATING INSTRUCTIONS
TRANS-RAK 40ft V6.3 MANUAL Issue D

Please note:
All lashings must have a minimum of 200mm of webbing wound around the spindle
on the Winch or the Ratchet. This equates to 2 360 degree turns of the spindle.
An easy way to ensure this is as follows:

1
With the hook in its correct position
and the winch set on the post, tighten
the webbing strap so that it is straight.

2
Release the webbing from the winch
and pull out 200mm. This is typically
the width of a man’s hand when
spread.

200mm

3
Wind the webbing x 2 turns around
the spindle and tighten with the 30mm
ratchet spanner.

Note:
Lashings with Ratchets must also have a minimum of 200mm of webbing wound
around the spindle – this equates to 2 turns.

10. Car Lifting

A. Check that the car is fitted with 4 wheel lashings and the Trans-Rack is horizontal.

B. Raise the Trans-Rak 1 so the car bonnet 2 is 200mm below the container
roof with the Trans-Rak frame tilted typically at around 18 degrees. Observe the
car rear or spoiler during this action to ensure it does NOT impact front wall 3
and Stop winding.

C. Go to the Closed End of the Trans-Rak frame and hook the Restraint Webbings
loosely into the underside holes 4 and the Winch into a Post Keyhole 5 . The
Webbing must not touch the Trans-Rak frame (see GAP in picture below) and
must not be more than the maximum of 30o degrees from horizontal.

D. Using the Restraint webbings, pull the Trans-Rak with car 6 back towards the
front wall - Some arrangements require this to ensure the necessary safe minimum
clearance from next car. Important: Please note that pulling the Trans-Rack back
towards the front wall will lift the vehicle bonnet. It is important therefore to observe
that the minimum 70mm clearance to container ceiling is not compromised and
bonnet and roof of car do NOT impact the container ceiling.

H. Use a 300mm long spanner to turn the Winch and hand tighten with a maximum
force of 25kg on the lever. Tighten all 4 Winches.

I. Lower the Screw Lock plate 8 over the 30mm hexagon drive on both the LH
and RH side. If necessary, turn the hexagon nut a few degrees with a 30mm
spanner to line it up with the aperture in the Screw Lock. Important: THESE
LOCKS MUST ALWAYS BE CLOSED FOR TRANSPORT - both laden AND
empty.

J. Perform these final checks before any other activity. Check over the Trans-Rak
and Car lashings. Make sure that all 4 x Restraint Webbings 10 are correctly
positioned, not touching the Frame work and equally tight. Make sure that the
4 x Wheel Lashings 11 or other lashing devices are lashed correctly and tightly
around both wheels and frame.

11. Bottom Car Loading and Lashing

A. Carefully drive the first bottom Car (Car 2) forwards underneath the secured
Trans-Rak and Car 1. Allow a minimum of 50mm clearance all round, particularly
between the rearmost part of this car and the centerline of the container. This will
create the necessary minimum clearance of 100mm in the centre for loading Car 3
onto the 2nd Trans-Rak. However consult the Software (see page 6) for optimal
stowage. Finally with Car 3 secured on the 2nd Trans-Rack, drive the bottom Car
(Car 4) forwards underneath and lash in position.

1 3

2 4

B. Lashing bottom cars: Note: TRI is not expert in lashings and users must consult
lashing experts. The 2 bottom cars are lashed and secured to the container floor by
4x Towing-Eye Lashings for Car 2 and a combination of 2x Through-the-Wheel
Lashings and 2x Towing-Eye lashings for Car 4. See diagram A. Car 4 uses the 2
Through-the-Wheel lashings due to its close proximity to the container door end.
Note: Cars that have no Towing Eye fixings will require 4x Through-the-Wheel
lashings per vehicle. See diagram B.

Accelerations: Containers can go on road, rail and sea.

When devising the lashing loads consider these accelerations:
• Handling accelerations - 0g upward / 2g downward / 1g transverse / 2g longitudinally
• Road accelerations - 1g upward / 1.6g downward / 0.3g transverse / 2g longitudinally
• Rail accelerations - 0.2g upward / 1.3g downward / 0.3g transverse / 2g longitudinally
• Sea accelerations - 0.5g upward / 1.8g downward / 0.6g transverse / 0.4g longitudinally

C. Through the Wheel Lashings: Carefully pass the Webbing and hook through
the car wheel and position the protective webbing Sleeve over the alloy wheel
rim. Return both ends to a single floor mounted loop and tighten with ratchet.

Pass webbing and protective sleeve Position Sleeve to protect alloy wheels
through wheel apertures

D. Towing-Eye Lashings: Locate the car’s Towing-eyes (front and back of car)
and attach hooks from 2 separate lashings. If the hole in the car's towing-eye is
too small to take two hooks then use a diverter hook to enlarge the hole - see
picture below. Fit the other ends to a container floor loop on opposite sides of
container at between 2 to 3 metres away - Do not use the nearest floor loop as
this will not provide sufficient lashing stability.

Note: Wheel lashings should be located away or below the body-work of the car
to prevent wear or damage. If contact cannot be avoided then use a Protective
Webbing Sleeve in the contact area.

If the hole in the towing-eye

is too small to take two
hooks then use a diverter
hook to enlarge the hole.

E. Check transport clearances between Cars and frame and container. Repeat all
stages for the rear Trans-Rak, and make a final visual inspection of all 4 Cars and
system.

F. Remove all tools and equipment and lock them away safely for future use.
Important – Do not leave any loose items in the container during transport.

G. Carefully close the container doors checking for clearance between door and Car 4.

12. Unloading Cars

A. Before unloading the Cars, check that all equipment is present and working.

B. To unload the 4 cars, repeat the Loading sequence in reverse order (see below),
following all stages carefully for the safety of personnel and the cars.

Summary for Unloading:

1 – Place ramp at door end for unloading.

2 – Release the Wheel lashings and Towing-eye lashings on first bottom car (Car 4).

3 – Reverse drive car out of container.
