Self Study Assignment (Do it on a piece of paper)

Grade : VIII
Topic : Force and Newton’s Law
Submission Date : First meeting after “smoke holiday”

1. As we all know, Earth has gravitational force that will attract mass of an object to the ground. Could you
explain:
a. Why birds that are flying on the sky don’t fall down
b. Why asteroids do not fall down to the earth
2. Every morning Suzie opens the window of her bedroom to let fresh air enter her room. Based on the
statement, answer the following questions.
a. Does she do any force? What makes you think that way?
b. What kind of force happens in the phenomenon? Mention and explain 2 of them
3. Mention and give example 4 possible effects of applying force to an object.
4. Bryan is pushing a table to the left by using 40 N while Jacky is pushing the same table to the right by
using 15 N. If frictional force between table and floor is 3 N, decide the force resultant and its direction.
5. Look at the following picture. (Consider that the forces are aligned)

Decide the magnitude of force resultant and its direction

6. There’s a box located in the middle of a room. Four boys are pushing the box at the same time but different
directions. Andy pushes to the North with 20 N, Billy pushes to the East with 18 N, Charlie pushes to the
South with 8 N and Dominique pushes to West with 9 N.
a. Draw the sketch of the forces given by the boys to the box
b. Decide the magnitude of force resultant
7. Look at the following forces.
30°

Draw and the decide the force resultant magnitude of :

a. A + B + C
b. C + A - B
8. Complete the following table. (1 N = 100000 dyne)
no ΣF m A
A ……………… N 500 gram 4 m/s2
B 200 N …………… gram 2 N/kg
C 250 kN 750 kg …………….. m/s2
D 40000 dyne 16 kg …………….. N/kg
E ……………. kdyne 8 kg 5 m/s2

9. Look at the picture! Calculate the rope tensions (T1, T2, T3)!
Mass of the triangle is 3 kg.
Mass of the square is 4 kg.
Mass of the circle is 4 kg.
Gravitational acceleration is 10 m/s2.
10. Amir, Budi and Charles are playing tug of war. Amir and Budi are on the same team. Amir gives 50 N,
Budi gives 40 N and Charles gives 30 N. If all of them have the same mass 40 kg, calculate the
acceleration happened to the losing side!
11. A toy car is moving with acceleration of 0.5 m/s2. If the mass of the car is 100 gram, calculate the force
needed to pull that toy car!
12. Give an example of daily phenomenon from every Newton’s Law
