PETROSAINS RBTX CHALLENGE 2019

Innovation Category
Rules and Regulations
1. Objective
‘Innovation’ is one of three competition categories offered in the Petrosains RBTX
Challenge 2019. It aims to promote the knowledge of digital technology to school students
and enhance their potential in designing and prototyping of innovative solutions.

In this category, students are required to brainstorm for innovative ideas and solutions
based on digital technology and develop a prototype then demonstrate and present their
solutions.

2. Categories
i. Junior Level Category
- Students from 6 to 12 years old.

ii. Advanced Level Category


- Students from 13 to 17 years old.

3. Theme
The theme for both categories is based on the United Nations Sustainable Development
Goal (SDG) number 11: Sustainable Cities and Communities

Goal number 11 make cities and human settlements inclusive, safe, resilient and
sustainable. By 2030, the target is to ensure access for all to adequate, safe and affordable
housing and basic services and upgrade slums. To provide access to safe, affordable,
accessible and sustainable transport systems for all, improving road safety, notably by
expanding public transport, with special attention to the needs of those in vulnerable
situations, women, children, persons with disabilities and older persons. To enhance
inclusive and sustainable urbanization and capacity for participatory, integrated and
sustainable human settlement planning and management in all countries. Strengthen
efforts to protect and safeguard the world’s cultural and natural heritage.

Besides that, the target is to reduce the adverse per capita environmental impact of cities,
including by paying special attention to air quality and municipal and other waste
management and provide universal access to safe, inclusive and accessible, green and
public spaces, in particular for women and children, older persons and persons with
disabilities.

4. Project Requirement
i. The proposed solutions must solve the above mentioned theme.
ii. The solution must be in the form of a product based on digital technology which
consist of a microprocessor (microcontroller) that must be programmed.
iii. For the Advanced Category, the project must also include an ‘Internet of Thing’
(IoT) technology (connectivity – data logging, device to device communication
using any wireless interface).

5. Registration
i. Teams can register at the RBTX registration page at www.petrosains.com.my
ii. The registration deadline is on 31st May 2019.
iii. Each team must submit a two minutes video and a 200 words abstract to explain
about their project idea and how they are going to develop the prototype.
iv. Registration is FREE.
v. Shortlisted teams who will advance to the Grand Finals will be informed via the
website.

6. Team Compositions
Each team must comprise of a maximum three participants and one mentor which can
be either a teacher or guardian.

7. Competition Stages
There are two stages of the competition:
i. Selection Stage (Upon Registration)
- Video Duration: Two minutes.
- Video must be uploaded on YouTube as a public video and the link to the video
must be submitted during registration.
- Abstract: not more than 200 words (upload through google form link)
- The content of the video and abstract must include team name, project title,
problem statement, proposed solution, estimated costing and impact to society.
(Please refer judging criteria).

ii. Grand Finals Stage


- Teams that advance from the Selection Stage are required to develop the
prototype of their solutions then exhibit and present their prototype at the RBTX
Grand Finals.
- Judges comprising of experts from the academia and industry will evaluate the
team exhibit and presentation.
- Demo and presentation time: 10 minutes

9. Prizes
i. The projects exhibited at the Grand Finale will be awarded with Gold, Silver and
Bronze Medals based on the evaluation by the expert judges.
ii. The top three projects will be awarded with cash prizes
