1. There are several different aspects of learning systems in Indonesia and in America, for
example when entering college, Americans usually learn skills that can be used in the world
of work for two years, then they will only continue their four years after that, in Indonesia
itself, already has a secondary school that is specialized in learning, namely vocational high
school, so in Indonesia there is no need to add two years to learning more special skills, both
vocational and high school seniors can have the same opportunities for study. Then there is
student participation, in America students dominate the course of learning, they are used to
conducting discussions and question and answer with fellow students, so the role of the
teacher here is only guiding students, even students there can choose what topics to study,
this is very different from Indonesian culture, here the one who dominates the class is the
teacher, so when the teacher explains something no student can interrupt the conversation,
later when the explanation is complete, the question and answer session will take place, so
Indonesian students who move to America will feel shocked by learning applied, because
they thought the teacher or lecturer was not doing his job, but that was what Americans
wanted, namely critical thinking, students were not only given knowledge but were also
taught to interact with others. There is also a relationship between teacher and student, in
America the title of teacher is only in the classroom, when they are outside the classroom,
students and teachers can interact freely, in the sense that they can position themselves, so
it's no wonder there are so many teachers who eat together or just go to the cafe with the
students, because formalities are only in the class, this is very different from Indonesian
culture, the title of teacher is something that must be upheld, we must respect the teacher
inside and outside the class, in the sense that when it is outside of school hours, the teacher
will remain a teacher, not a friend, even when meeting on the road we will give the
impression of being uncomfortable when meeting our teacher. well, that is a few examples
of differences between the systems implemented in Indonesia and America, which I regret is
that the learning system in Indonesia adopted an old system that was implemented in
America. Americans understand that their systems are less able to develop so they look for
other systems to implement, while here we apply a system that Americans think is wrong.
but this is also influenced by the culture in Indonesia, ordinary people call it 'eastern
people's culture', in my opinion the system applied in Indonesia needs improvement and
more monitoring.
2. Americans work values, seen from the positive side, Americans have high competition in
work, make them work hard so they can survive there or lazy people are usually looking for
new innovations, technologies that can make life easier and others. but on the negative side,
they lack empathy for others, they often think of themselves to forget the people around
them, besides that the impact of their work is the lack of time with their families and many
children who lack parental care
3. Different ways of communicating between Indonesians and Americans, one example of a big
difference is that when you ask something, Indonesians will usually not go straight to the
main point, for example when you are going to borrow money, Indonesians will come home
and bring a little gift, and start asking things related to the borrower, such as how they are
doing, how are the parents, and many more, and after talking for a long time, then the
borrower will tell his financial condition, then borrow money. Unlike America, when you
need something, you will immediately ask it, they usually ask directly to the point, seen here
there is a cultural role that goes into the way they talk as I explained in number one.
