LESSON PLAN

IN
EARTH AND LIFE SCIENCE
Date: _______________________

Time: _______________________

Section: 11- EIM 2, 11- ATS 2, 11- ABM

I. OBJECTIVE:
At the end of the lesson, the students should be able to:
 State the different hypothesis explaining the origin of the universe.

II. SUBJECT MATTER AND MATERIALS:

A. Topic: Origin and Structure of the earth
a. Universe and Solar System
b. Earth and Earth Systems
B. References:
CG: S11/12ES-Ia-2-1
TG: pp. 1-10
Books: Earth and Life Science pp. 3-11
C. Other References:

D. Materials: power point presentation, laptop video clips, printed IM’s

III. PROCEDURE:
A. Preparatory Activity
Elicit: “GUESSING GAME”
- Arrange the jumbled letters to form words related to the universe. Say something about the formed
words/terms.
BONYRIAC MTETAR
SARTS
PTORSATOR
NULEBAE
Engage:
- The teacher will present to the students a game. “CELEBRITY BLUFF” (FACT OR BLUFF). From the given
statements students will choose if it is fact or bluff.
1. The universe as we currently know it comprises all space and time, and all matter and energy in it.
2. The universe is at least 4.5-4.6 billion years old.
3. The solar system as part of the Milky Way is located at the outer limb of the galaxy.

B. Lesson Proper
1. Explore “Let’s play… 4 PICS 1 WORD”
The teacher will group the students into five. Each group will be provided a long bond paper to write
their answer. They will be given pictures to identify that are related to the universe. After the game, let
the students answer the following questions.
1. What is the composition of the universe?
2. Will the universe expand forever?
3. What constitutes the universe?
2. Explain
The Origin of the Universe

THE ORIGIN OF THINGS has always been a central concern for humanity; the origin of the stones, the
animals, the plants, the planets, the stars and we ourselves. Yet the most fundamental origin of them all
would seem to be the origin of the universe as a whole – of everything that exists, without which there
could be none of the creatures and things mentioned above, including ourselves. Perhaps that is why
the existence of the universe, its origin and nature, has been a subject of explanation in almost all
civilizations and cultures. In fact, every culture known to anthropology has had a cosmogony – a history
of how the world began and continues, of how mankind was created and of what the gods expect of us.
The understanding these civilizations had of the universe is very different to what science teaches us
today
The Big Bang theory In the 1920s, the American astronomer Edwin Hubble sought to establish a
relationship between the distance of a galaxy and the speed at which it is either approaching or moving
away from our own. The speed of a galaxy can be clocked with relative ease, but the distance requires a
whole chain of tasks that makes it laborious and relatively imprecise work. After painstaking research,
Hubble identified a correlation between the distance and the speed of the galaxies he was studying. The
more distant the galaxy, the greater its recession velocity
3. Elaborate
1. Is the universe expanding? Why did you say so?
2. How did E. Hubble explain universal expansion?
3. How many years did our universe exist?

IV. EVALUATION

Direction: choose the letter of the correct answer.

1. Besides ordinary matter, the universe contains a lot of dark matter, which is an unknown substance. What fraction
of the mass of the universe is ordinary matter, like hydrogen and helium?
a. 70-80 %
b. 30-40 %
c. 2-3 %
d. 0-0.2 %
2. Which of the following would scientist say true about MOST galaxies?
a. They are moving away from each other.
b. They spread evenly throughout space.
c. They consist only of stars.
d. They are held together by electromagnetism.
3. The globular clusters in our Galaxy_________
a. Are concentrated in the galactic nucleus.
b. Are spherically distributed about the galactic center.
c. Are present only in our galaxy.
d. Are concentrated in spiral arms.
4. The expansion of the universe was discovered by observing that all galaxies are moving away from us. Who made
this discovery?
a. Albert Einstein
b. Johannes Kepler
c. Edwin Hubble
d. Both a and c
5. Which of the following would scientist say is true about matter in the universe?
a. Matter in the universe started out very uniform and has gotten less uniform with time.
b. The first elements formed in the universe were primarily hydrogen and helium.
c. All the present structure in the universe was formed in the big bang.
d. Both a and b

V. EXTEND

What is the big bang theory? How it is used to explain the origin and evolution of the universe?
