I am from Kulon Progo and i would like to explain history of Kulon Progo. Before the
formation of Kulon Progo Regency on October 15th 1951, The Kulon Progo was divided into
two districts, Kulon Progo regency which was the Ngayogyakarta Hadiningrat Sultanate region
and Adikarta Regency which was the Pakualaman Duchy. After the Diponegoro War 1825-
1830 in the Kulon Progo region, now entering the trritory of the Sultanate formed four district
namely Pengasih Regency (1831), Sentolo Regency (1831), Nanggulan Regency (1851),
Kalibawang Regency ( 1855).In the southern area of Kulon Progo there is an area that is
included in Kejawen Keprajan called Karan Kemuning, which is then known as the Adikarta
Regency.According to the book ‘Vorstelanden’ it is stated that in 1813 Prince Notokusumo
was appointed KGPA Ario Paku Alam 1 anda obtained palyak to the west of the Progo River
along the southern coast known as the Urut Sewu Sand.Because the land was scattered
land, then Sentono Paku Alam named Kyai Kawirejo I advised that the land was put
together. With the union of these pelagia, it becomes a unitary district level. This area was later
named Karang Kemuning Regency, the capital is Brosot.
Based on an agreement from Sri Sultan Hamengku Buwono IX and Sri Pakualam VIII,
then the central government issued Law NO. 18 of 1951 which was adopted on 12 October
1951 and promulgated on 15 October 1951.This Law regulates changes to Law No. 15 of 1950
for the merger Kulon Progo Regency and Adikarto dictricts in the DIY environment into one
district with the name Kulon Proco which subsequently has the right to manage and manage its
own house.
