Hairy Coat

We’re not sure if you’d really

want to wear this coat on a cold
January morning. But you’d
certainly cut a striking gure if
you did. And the rst thing
someone would have to gure
out is what was your hair, and
what wasn’t. Actually, that’s
easy. None of it is yours.

The coat is by Martin Margiela

of Belgium and the Met
describes it as an accumulation
of glossy blond wigs and hair (acquired by the Metropolitan Museum of Art, NY, in

extensions that are assembled 2018)

like objets trouvés into a coat.

Margiela is sold on the idea of
“artisanship” – the skill of making something very good from ordinary or unlikely
materials.

Margiela makes his one-of-a-kind pieces from repurposed or cheap textiles and from
found objects to demonstrate that haute couture does not need luxuriously expensive
materials: it needs the sort of creative artisanship, plus time and effort, that can
transform discarded wigs into a fashionable coat.

This tribute to the skill of the human hand challenges a key concept of Parisian couture
which traditionally hides any signs of how it was made.

Which is the better use for a wig? On the model’s head or on her body?

Moooo…
Dennis Raleigh assumed it was French – as are
most signs with modeling as sophisticated as this –
but when he turned it over, he was udderly
(sorry!) surprised to see the label of a Pittsburg
maker.

He asked $2,250 for it at the Gurley Show in

Concord, Mass.

Black Figures, Red Earthenware

In 1766-67, Sir William Hamilton (1730-1803) published a book of his renowned
collection of Greek vases, which was later sold to the British Museum.

In 2018, at the Delaware Antiques Show, Winterthur displayed two Pennsylvania

earthenware dishes that bore visual similarities with the black- gure imagery of ancient
Greece. The black dog and deer do in fact somewhat resemble the black gures often
found on ancient Grecian pottery — ones that Hamilton’s publication disseminated
widely. It appears that the dissemination reached Pennsylvania, even though the
sophistication of the Greek painters was certainly not replicated by their Pennsylvanian
descendants.
