1. SELECTION OF TOPIC?
Global Ayurvedic Village project is a cross sectorial concept, leveraging the ASSOCIATIONS OF AYURVEDA ACROSS THE WORLD
interlinkages between Industries, health care, human psychology and well being.
The list below shows few of the renowned Ayurveda Associations across the world. The
Ayurveda offers a rich and dynamic body of knowledge that provides comprehensive presence of such a large number of associations itself shows how important a Global
disease management and supports holistic wellness on a deep level. With its roots Ayurvedic Village project is.
dating back over five thousand years to India, Ayurveda is distinct in that it focuses on
harmonizing the unique constitution of an individual with the natural rhythms of our
world. Utilizing nutrition, lifestyle, herbal medicines and time-tested therapies,
Ayurveda brings the elements back into balance within the body to create total

Thus working on such a topic will help in dealing with projects of a market which is
growing at a very fast rate on a Global scale.
The acceptance of 21st June as Yoga Day by 177 countries of UN itself proves the
popularity and demand of the Ancient Indian Knowledge namely Ayurveda, yoga and
meditation. Being Indians it becomes our greatest responsibility to work in this field to
spread our ancient knowledge. Also this subject of meditation and Ayurveda is not only
a concept but an immerging field having immense business prospects (Eg. Kairali
Ayurvedic Resorts, Isha Foundation, Patanjali and the list goes on….).
So, considering the above concepts and facts Global Ayurvedic Village comes off as a
credible thesis topic. But, not only as thesis topic in architecture, the whole process of
it, beginning from desk appraisal to case studies then finally through research and
implementation in design will help in cultivating thoughts and personality, helping in
holistic development as an individual.

2. SITE SELECTION
Kerala Industrial Infrastructure Development Corporation (KINFRA) a State Govt. SITE DETAILS
Agency is launching a project “KINFRA Global Ayurveda Village” at Ayiroor
Village, Varkala, Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala. LOCATION: Ayiroor Village, Varkala, Trivandrum
Kerala Industrial Infrastructure Development Corporation, KINFRA aims at bringing APPROACH: 2.7 km from Verkala Sivagiri Railway Station, 55 km from airport
together all the suitable resources available in the state and developing infrastructure
to woo the Industrial growth of the state. KINFRA is dedicated to catalyze Industrial Estimated cost of project: Rs 152.50 crore
growth in Kerala by providing the best industry-specific-infrastructure.
KINFRA has identified over 20 core competency areas. It has 24 well-defined Industrial

The Parks of KINFRA are scattered in different parts of the state. Kerala has several
specialties. Kerala is the only state in India which have a legislature for statutory Single
Window Clearance. The state offers highly skilled manpower and cheap labor compared
to international rates. Owing to the rich natural resources of the land, the State of
Kerala offers the lowest tariffs for potable water and electricity compared to its
counterparts which eliminates the one the biggest issues in the country today.

4. CASE STUDY 4.1 ISHA FOUNDATION
Isha Foundation majorly a meditation center along with
some other facilities is situated in foothills of Velliangiri
Mountain, Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu.
The whole Campus was divided into several parts/zones
with different levels of access(regular visitors, visitors
staying in cottages, volunteers, permanent members,
staff & admin, Guru)

According to rituals before going to the dhayanalinga for meditation men should
d take a bath in suryakunda to purify one’s body and alleviate the flow of energies
through the body.

A Rudraksh tree was placed at the centre of the complex. Rudraksh is
considered to be one of the most powerful energy devices.
3. Nandi
A symbolic statue of Nandi cast in metal alloy was placed in
front of the Dhayanalinga also acting as an active spot for
taking photographs and selfies

This is the Focal Point of Isha Centre. A meditation centre
by function and a spiritual place by religion. It houses a 10ft
tall Shiva Linga at the centre. Believed to be the strongest
center for radiating cosmic/meditative energies on earth.
This is one of the teaching centers in the meditation centre complex with restricted access.
Sessions concerning meditation and yoga are conducted at pre decided hours of the day.

and Hot & Cold Water along with basic bathroom requirements. Being a little larger it has a small sit in area in the room and with a little more luxury.

1. Natural physical features found within the site and around it:
• Flora: the site is a part of the west coast semi evergreen forest area. The trees here are a mix of evergreen and deciduous nature
• Bamboos as well as species belonging to leguminous family, which are rare in evergreens, occur abundantly. Large woody climbers,
epiphytes, ferns, and mosses are also found. Undergrowth is mostly evergreen and quite dense
Floristic composition:
• The majority of trees are coconut trees.
• Top Canopy: The Evergreens met with are Hopea parviflora, Vateria indica, Palaquim ellipticum, Cinnamomum zeylanicum, Polyalthia fragrans,
Hydnocarpus pentandra, Tetrameles nudiflora, Holigarna arnottiana, Persea macrantha, Elaeocarpus serratus, Dysoxylum malabaricum, Toona ciliate
species, Mangifera indica, Evodia lunu‐ankenda etc. The deciduous species include Terminalia paniculata, Dalbergia latifolia Grewia tiliaefolia,
Artocarpus hirsutus, Bombax ceiba, Pterocarpus marsupium Stereospermum chelonoides, etc.
• Middle Canopy: Cinnamomum zeylanicum, Aporusa lindleyana, Spondias indica, Canarium strictum, Carallia candel, Dillenia pentagyna,
Bridelia retusa, Mitragyna parvifolia, Grewia tiliaefolia, Albizzia ordoratissima, etc.
• Lower Canopy: Antidesma zeylanicum, Aporusa lindleyana, Trema orientalis, Olea dioica, Gmelina arborea, etc Dendrocalamus strictus,
Bambusa arundinacea, Ochlandra rheedii, Calamus rotang etc also occur under open canopy.
• Ground Vegetation: Strobilanthus species, Curcuma species, Glycosmis pentaphylla, Callicarpa tomentosa, Ipomoea sp etc are the commonly
found undergrowth. Climbers: Large climbers as well as thorny climbers are seen. Entada scandens, Smilax macrophylla, Bauhinia species,
Dioscorea sp, Calycopterix floribunda species, etc are the climbers usually met with.
The water element:
• The back waters from Arabian Sea came to the site which is at a distance of three kilometres from the coast. The water frontage on the site is
1.2 km long.
• The waters are inhabited by small oceanic creatures.
• Two channels run through the site which also carry this water to inner parts of the site, these channels meet at a junction which creates a pool
of approx. 50 m diameter.
The soil element:
• The soils of the Kerala are predominantly Lateritic of both sedimentary and residual types. Other soil types have developed in certain areas
due to local physiographic and environmental factors. Coastal alluvial soil is originated from recent deposits, predominantly marine, with some fluvial
sediments along the coast line.
